Can 9300 be converted to XPS2 and upgraded to 7800 Go?

OK, so 9300 can be FLASHED to XPS2, right? I have a 9 cell battery, and I would need to get a XPS2 recharger, right? Higher voltage.

Can a flashed 9300 to XPS2 run a 7800 Go card? Higher voltage should already be there, right?

There are a gazillion threads on this topic. Look around.

Wait for Showman or showgirl to answer telling you "NO F@CKING WAY YOU LOOSER 9300 OWNER...the 7800 is leet and only for XPS owners".

Then a collection of XPS worshipers will follow him. Actually I cant believe he has not already posted in this thread already he is here so much.

The majority thinking is no. That said no one.............and I mean no one really knows as NO ONE can even order the 7800 yet. Some have tried to only get either desktop 7800's or latter be told by Dell that they dont have them.

The 9100 got 9800 mobile even though the 9200 was only supposed to get it....so there is a possibility that it might happen.

yes. although i don't know how but it definetely can be done.

if i knew about the 7800go earlier I would've bought my 9300 with ATI X300 gfx and saved $200 toward my final 7800 upgrade.

Someone managed to get a 6800 ultra card into his/her 9300 by changing the heat sink and power box, so I suppose fitting a 7800 is a possibility. For now, just wait...

yes its possible... look for the post by irobertus.... he has some pics... and from the looks of it.. 9300 owners may come out ahead in the 7800 upgrade than xps2 owners costwise.....

You don't think you can find an x300 owner who will give you $125 for a drop in upgrade to a 6800? It will take some doing to go to the Ultra and to the 7800 so some folks might not want to take the plunge. I don't know, but think it would pul in at least $100 on eBay and since I used a 40% off coupon the $199 upgrade cost for the 6800 was like $125 (40% of $199 right?).

Anyway, good luck

I still haven't figured out why someone would buy an i9300 and then try to upgrade it to an XPS 2. But for now, I'll assume it's because of the cost breakdown.

The 7800 GTX Go costs $650 from spare parts, and then you'd need the XPS 2 power adapter. You'd have to cut away some plastic from the inside of your i9300 and glue it elsewhere to fit the new video module. It's been done with the 6800 Ultra Go, and the 7800 GTX Go shouldn't be different.

Sounds like a fun weekend project...and an expensive one at that. So, if you have a lot of money to spend on your computer, and you want to spend a good deal of time getting that 7800 into your i9300, then I'd say mod your i9300. If you don't want to lose your warranty and you don't want to risk breaking your laptop, or you don't want to spend a lot of time doing the mod, then I'd say sell/return your i9300 and buy an XPS 2 with the 7800.

It's hard to argue which is more cost effective. That comes down to how much your time is worth. No matter what way you choose, you lose a lot of money.

Let me point out that ~$650 is 3/4 of the way to a desktop system.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

As I said before and i'll say it again, the 7800Go GTX and the 6800Go Ultra will not be offered for the 9300.

Wait...the i9200 never had the MR9800 as I recall. I believe the i9200 had the MR9700 while the i9100 and iXPS Gen 1 both had the 9800 (seeing how they only differed in the paint job).

Well anyways, I think you'll see a replacement part for the i9300's 6800 card. Probably a 7400 or 7600, I don't know the naming scheme. Basically a 7xxx series card that fits the mid/high end mobile card niche the 6800 occupies now.

But despite all the buzz around the 7800 GTX Go, I came to an important realization when I actually thought about getting it; it is still only a Direct x 9 card. That Directx 10 tech video of Far Cry impressed me, and I don't want to invest any more money in direct x 9 parts, though $650 is a lot to invest in any video card period.

A tech came and replaced my 6800 Ultra Go today, so hopefully that solves my white screen reboots in WoW. If not, then it's a bug with WoW.

Putting a 7800Go in a 9300 will most likely be possible, but the cost effectiveness kind of ruins the beauty of the 9300: best bang for your buck. That said, the 6800Go is still pretty peppy and games quite well at 1440x900. But unless the 7800Go comes down in price, it won't be worth it. Of course you could also shop around and see if another manufacturer's 7800Go can be fitted with the Dell heatsink, flashed to a Dell BIOS, and work in a Dell laptop.
