I have an old toshiba tecra 500 cdt. I want to know if it has the ability to get on line with my wireless network? It has the pcmia slots but will I have to buy a different card than what I have in my 8100?Thanks.I was trying to fix it up for the grandkid to play with or sell it on ebay.

It should work. Since the 500's not gonna take windows XP and since (as far as I know) there are no wifi drivers for win95, you're going to have to use 98 or 2k (I used 2k in a tecra 520 and it ran like a champ and would recomend it over 98 by all means). Then you'll have to make sure you have the appropriate drivers and wireless software for that version of windows.

I found these minimum requirements for wireless. If I am not mistaken, your Tecra 500CDT is below these

How do I determine if my laptop supports wireless?
Minimum requirements are as follows:

PC:

667 MHz Pentium III processor or faster
64 MB of RAM or better
Available PC card slot
CD-ROM Drive (for installing the drivers)
Microsoft Windows 2000 or XP

Yes I double checked and the processor in your Tecra is only 120mhz. I would imagine your memory (RAM) is probably below the 64MBs too. As well, you would be hard pressed to install either Win2000 or WinXP on that machine and have it run reliably. Its just too old for that.

you can do it. your speed bottleneck will be with your lappy and your wifi will likely feel like 56k.

Befor you buy a card make sure you tryed it before. I bought a normal Ethernet card for my 4030 and it works well under any win but my 230 CDX won't recognize it, even if it runs 32 bit cards!
Stange?!?!?

My best tip is to go to the shop and try it right there. If it is a bigger computer shop they should have service as well. I know when I bought the Ethernet card I just wanted to take it and the salesman recomendded me to bring the laptop ther and the service guy will try it for free, because they had problems with costumers complaining about the cards not working, and they don't exchange them.
I never used wifi cards before so I can't recommend you any type, sorry!

The manual on Toshibas site says it works with 32 bit PCI cards but still try it so you won't throw money out for nothing!

I'd say try and get the drivers & software for the card you have in the 8100 and see if you can use that (assuming it's pcmcia since I dodn't see a USB port listed on the specs of the 500). Then if it works, either get a new card for the 8100 or get the same card for the 500. If it is a USB card, then you'll need to get a PCMCIA card. The slots on that 500 support 16bit and 32bit cards, so you should be good to go in that area with just about any card. Id say take a look at THIS CARD since it's cheap and says it will work with almost any laptop, and supports windows 95-xp.
