I Need Help!

I bought a Linksys Router (WRT52GS) and I cant get it to work using wireless dialup. I called Linksys Help desk and them told me it will not work on dialup. I asked if there was another model that will work and the supervisor said no.

What are you folks using?

It will work on virtually any regular wireless router that has standard ethernet ports including the WRT54GS. Follow the directions. Bring down your firewall (both on the client and the server). If all else fails try bringing down the MTU to 1420 on the router but it shouldn't be a problem.

I have sp1 but I'm sure sp2 home has ICS. You may have to install off the cd

I spent all night trying to get my dialup wireless to work. I'll try again later.

When I set up my router, I didnt have "Obtain an IP automatically". Mine said Obtain DHCP automatically. I have DHCP disabled. Maybe the setup on my desktop isnt correct. I dont see a dial up connection on my Network Connection screen. I deleted it because it brought up netscape dialer.

Any ideas what may be wrong?

Buy a Wiflyer portable router modem for dialup or broadband from Always on wireless, google it,you might have better luck than I did trying to order one [kept saying my mastercard had an incorrect address]

:O people still use dial-up? even with all those comericals on the tv saying go to bell south ,comcast, and all those other things that gives speeds 400 times faster than dial-up for 40-60 bucks a month.. amazing.

but its a good guide but i dont know anyone who would use it unless to learn how to hook up wireless dialup.

Disable ICS temporarily. If you haven't disabled dhcp on the router, you'll be given a compatible ip address by the router which you can use to log into it. If you disabled dhcp, assign yourself an IP address 192.168.2.2 and then log in.

It SUCKS.I was that way and pay out the wazoo for mine. The place I finally got my HIGH-SPEED through is the ONLY one offered to me.

And remember that there are people from other countries here, too. I doubt you will find a 4mbps connection widely available is Africa. Fortunately, I use broadband (600k), but still pay a considerable amount of money for it.

I believe there is a way to do port mapping in windows xp ics settings. If dhcp is on both the ics server and the router, ics may work but you won't be able to see the ics server on windows network. What exactly are you trying to do? The setup I described is most basic.

We tried satellite a while ago. We got tired of how unreliable it was. Dial-up is king where we live.

It will not work on newer Netgear routers, there's no way to access the router unless you have it hooked up to a cable/dsl modem.

1. What routers do you recomend?

2. Will a wireless access point work?

I don't believe that. How do they expect you to configure the router for dsl/cable before it works. Even if what you say is true, you can plug in the ethernet cable coming from the ICS desktop to the Internet/WAN port on the router to emulate the cable/dsl modem and the access the settings. The reason why I said in the tutorial to plug in the ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the routerr is to put the ICS server on the network in order to share files and controll the dial-up properties.

A simple AP will not work. It has to have NAT software to do private to public port mapping.

Well according to the manuals and tech support, Magic gnomes jump out of the router and set up the network once it is plugged into a cable/dsl modem. (supposedly automatically sets itself up)

When I pressed the issue with tech support they told me to return the product, and informed me that it says "cable/dsl connection" is one of the requirements on the box. Which it is.

I tried some google searching for emulators after just plugging my nic into the Internet slot didn't work, but I could not find any emulators.

Do you have/know of one I can try?

This is crazy, why would you even do this

Yeah, for me it's not just dial up though it's Verizon wireless mobile broadband through a PCMCIA card.

It's been a major headache for me. Especially since I can't put the card in our laptops as they are new dells with only expresscard slot.

Dell is releasing an expresscard modem for Verizon in the next few weeks (it's for sale now on thier site, but 1-2week shipping delay)

And If I get the expresscard modem I wont be able to use it in my home PC, which has a PCI to PCMCIA adapter to use the current card. As far as I have seen there are no PCI to Expresscard adapters, and the USB to Expresscard adapter is way expensive.

I doubt Verizon is going to let me use both cards with one account.

By the way I have a Netgear WGU624 router. I bought it hoping to be able to set it up o 5.8ghz to avoid interfering with the wireless broadband modem that operates on the 2-2.2ghz cell phone band.

Let me know if you can find any info on emulating a cable/dsl modem please Mich43L
