Double check with the manual you got with your TV and verify what ports it does have what they can be used for.
I'm still perplexed as to why the RGB connector on my parents TV only supports 640x480, when the screen is able to push 1080.
Maybe it has something to do with the whole progressive and interlaced thing.

It will work, just be careful with brightness and how long you leave things on
Sarc: 1080 lines is only through the appropriate connectors (DVI, etc)... if you plug in through any other connector (S-video, or through a conversion box/cable) then your TV set will not display in HD format (1080 or 720) but a lower non-HD format... bottom line, want your PC to display 1080, your laptop-out and your tv-in both have to support it...
