w00t! Convertion Complete.

Thread Starter
So its been like 3 years of playing with linux, and finally i converted (for 24 hours now) to 100% linux. That said, my desktop has been linux only (mepis 2005) for almost a year now, and my lappy, just because linux only (breezy). That means, no windows programs to be found . In a way I miss CS:S, but i'll get cadega eventually and get it working. Otherwise, doing good. I have fglrx (latest version) installed getting me over 2000fps in glxgears and around 440fps in fgl_glxgears (not bad for a 9700 128mb). Paired with a gig of ram (pc2700) and a nice cpu (amd64 3200+) the performance is reasonable, evne though i had to take a hit of an i386 kernel, but its not bad. My wifi is setup via ndiswrapper which actually seems to be more stable than the native madwifi . I also rebuilt my kernel to support Suspend2, and it works, there is a problem though, fglrx drivers suck and they don't support suspend.

Taking bets now on how long i'll last before i go back to windows

ermmmm I give it a week. I once knew the addiction that is CS.

how do you sync your x50v? i also have one and my main purpose for windows atm is to sync it...

i haven't figured the x50v syncing yet. i know i can get it to connect via synce but as far as installing programs and what have you, still to figure that part out among some other things. maybe in the future i'll install Win4Lin so that i can run activesync and maybe counterstrike, lol. I tried running CS with cedega today and failed badly.

How about this for the Axim? http://synce.sourceforge.net/synce/

ok, inspired by your comment i went and installed multisync and synce. synce is used to connect the unit to linux and synce-software-manager is used to add/remove programs. to sync to evolution i use multisync where i created an account that connects evolution to synce and it seems to be working.
how do they work? what i do now is just download cabs for my axim and copy them to my sd card with my card reader, when i want to sync i just boot into windows, activesync is pretty much the only reason i keep windows around now.

multisync basically opens up evolution and opens up synce and syncs one to the other . synce is much like activesync and does all the same things. you can use synce-software-manager to add/remove programs and so on. Both tools have GUI interfaces so they are noob friendly.

here is a howto i followed:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ynce+evolution

then i just went to the synce site and got the gnome applet, synce-program-manager, and some other add-on. Downloaded the rpms and then "sudo alien -i package.rpm"

as a final step i created some shortcuts to connect to my pda graphically (not via terminal)... i press the button and it syncs, and then made a shortcut for synce-package-manager
post #9 of 21
thanks for the link! it works well, though kind of a pain to go through all the commands just to get it connected.

make shortcut that goes to
Code:
gksu synce-serial-start
and it will connect you if your pda is on the dock.
that's wierd... when i run that shortcut it asks me for my password, then when i enter it it says wrong password...

Well, I'm not windows free, but my main machine (my laptop) does run only linux. Getting to this point was a huge feat, mainly because I do IT work and graphics work and have been using the same programs for many years. I do have a vmware win2000 setup, tho, for some critical work apps.

Here's what I need to have running on my laptop:
.........................................................................
Good 3d Graphics package- Used to use 3dsMax, now use maya.

Good 2d Graphics package- Used to use photoshop, now use gimp (may emulate photoshop in the future.)

HTML editor- Used to use dreamweaver, now use bluefish and a little of nvu.

Eclipse Webapp development- Fortunately Eclipse, Java, Apache, Tomcat and MySql run natively in linux.

CD Burning- Gnome and Gnome Baker

Newsgroups- Used to use XNews. Pan is the best newsreader ever. HD movies are my new obcession.

Productivity Suite- Open office and K-Office are perfect. Never used MS office.

Sync my Treo650- Evolution is adequate for contacts. Install apps through win2k in vmware.

Project Sync Software- Use starteam via vmware/win2k.
.........................................................................

Still can't Get this stuff working:
.........................................................................
Multitrack recording- Still trying to get my audio drivers working.

Bluetooth (or serial) Dial up networking- I have no clue if it's even possible with a treo.

GPS Mapping software- Haven't found anything yet.

Finally, Windows games that run decently via cedega. I think it's all ATI's fault.
.........................................................................

My goal was never to completely eliminate windows. Rather, it was to never need to upgrade to Longhorn/Vista. I work in the family business and handle all of our technology related matters. My ultimate goal is to get all of our document scanning workstations converted to linux boxes, but I have many obsticles to overcome before I get to that point. So for now it's linux exclusively on the backend with mostly windows desktops. Quickbooks is the next app to go...

Again bashing ati?
It is not ati's fault that windows game crash when runned through cedega or do not run. And also for ati make sure you add shm filesystem in fstab and restart

i hate fglrx with a passion because my custom kernel taht has Suspend2 kicks total and complete ass, but fglrx doesn't support suspending so if i suspend and come back my x is dead.

....suspends just fine with xorg "ati" driver, but the speed is 1/4 of what it is with fglrx

oh and 505, regarding your sig:
ubuntu has never been a traditional "noob" distro such as that of suse or mandrake. It doesn't have an all in one "control center" and a kernel that has all the drivers you can imagine, and all the modules and then some for what the kernel doesn't have. Ubuntu was just meant to be easy to stick in disk, install, reboot, login, and get to work! no bs, no crap. Also it all depends on hardware. Just ask onewickedferret, i tried installing 4 gentoo-based but not gentoo distros and each one not only failed to install, it killed my partitioning scheme and then some! (thats how i lost my windows in the first place). Slackware and slack-based distros i tried (slamd64, slackware 10, vector, few others) have nothing short of FAILED to start working correctly on first login. Ubuntu on the other hand got everything from the 1st try includig the resolution, wireless, scroller on touchpad, touchpad, hardware buttoms, and then some. I am not an ubuntu fanboy, i just happen to be using it right now because it was easy to get going with all my crap, and because its based on debian apt-get kicks total ass. I do like other distros such as onebase which i think is fantastic, damn small (although would never install it, its a worthy live cd), even kanotix is pretty good regardless of my problems configuring it. that said, gentoo and slack isn't for everyone. if you like them, i am glad you do, but most of us don't have a week of our lives to dedicate to make linux run OUR WAY.

Having spoken with ya many times I am sure you already know this, but Blender aint half bad, there are still some things missing from it, but overall pretty decent, and extremly fast interface once you get used to it.

Well that and running Dreamweaver under wine I dont think is to difficult anymore thankfully I am considering doing that with Studio * if I get it myself, more for the flash than anything, I have some odd uses for it.

I forgot to come back and mention, there has been some recent discussion on problems with that driver on one of the three groups I am part of, I need to go back and see if I can find it, but if you get a chance see if you can search thorugh ardour-dev, ardour-user, or Linux-Audio-Dev in their archives for it. I still need to get a chance to sit down and look at that thread again, time has been short lately though.

Now THAT one I KNOW exists, in fact I was considering building a mini-itx box for the car that would do this, Ill have to see where I found the info on it sometime for ya.

Anyways have fun

ABF, I'm sorry, it was a joke from the gentoo forums. (I'm downloading kubuntu as we speak) and i agree is one of the best distros out there and btw, slackware10.2 doesn't take a week to config.
hey erebus, does slack 10.2 still run a 2.4 kernel? or have they finally upgraded it to 2.6? my pc has sata drives, which the 2.4 kernel doesn't support very well, so i'm kinda stuck to distro's based on 2.6.
they have 2.4 but they offer "experimental" 2.6.13 and also the sata.i works pretty well for slack. THe alsa included with slack10.2 made me quit it, my sound card would have never worked
post #19 of 21
abf dont fret the i386 kernel. Between the 386 and the 686 on my Pentium M, I notice basically no difference.

lol....yeah i know, tests show less than a 5% boost, and on modern systems 5% is nothing. Hell, i just boosted my ram from 512 to 1gb and that *hardy* made a diff in day-to-day affairs, though it significantly improved my FPS in ET and ArmyOps (speaking of which, 2.5 for Mac OS and LInux came out a few days ago).

Man, I am such a CS:S kiddy that now I am playing ET because CS:S is being a bitch and doesn't run over Cedega, its so much freaken harder! Grr! As for armyops, really yet to start learning to play (yeah i completed most of training, but thats about it).
