HOW-TO: Upgrade your 9300 with the Ultra or 7800 "Photo Guide" - Page 17

post #321 of 1001
@hulk2006:

You need to make a bootable CD (made from the iso-image) which contains a bootable dos system and the bios update.

You won´t be lucky with only the bios file on CD. This can´t be startable...
post #322 of 1001
wtf man.

when I try to burn the file this pops up:

THE FILE HAS EXTRA INFO. ATTACHED TO IT THAT MIGHT BE LOST IF YOU CONTINUE COPYING. THE CONTENTS OF THE FILL WILL NOT BE AFFECTED. DO YOU WANT TO COPY THE FILE ANYWAYS?
post #323 of 1001
ok how do i do that?
post #324 of 1001
is that a O or 0 in IXPS2A01????
post #325 of 1001

@hulk2006

I downloaded the iso-file (about 11 MB) , opened it with Nero and burned it like configured on a CD-RW. But you can use any other burning software which supports iso files.

ok nevermind, I burned the file using clone CD and it worked, flahed everything. Now time to do the video card transplant.

Yes. The trick is to find a screwdriver that is the right size, particularly one that is deep enough. Experiment with several until you get a tight fix that gives some leverage. I had a problem with 3 before I found one that was perfect and then the screws came out easily.
post #329 of 1001
Look, just follow the instrucitons on p.1 of the sticky. It is perfectly straight forward and i had no problems flashing the bios.

Also, the "do we need a 130 w psu" quesiton has been flogged to death here. Just do a search. YOU CANNOT RUN THE 7800 AT FULL PERFORMANCE POWER USING THW 90W. YOU WILL HAVE HALF THE 3dMARKS COMPARED TO THE 130 W. END OF STORY.

Finished my 6800 go Ultra upgrade and pin mod

Thanks to your guide and Fatclown's I now have a 2.13 Ghz with a 6800 Ultra card. The cost was as follows thanks to EBAY :

130W brick = $25
9 cell battery=$57
6800 Ultra card=$125
Pentium M 1.6 2mb, 735 400mhz=$90
total=$297

I sold the 6 cell battery, Pentium m 1.6/533, and ATI X300 for $145 so the upgrade cost me $152.

Not bad for a great upgrade! Thanks A BUNCH!

I need to list my 6 cell and video card to sell on ebay. I'll probably keep the CPU on hand for a little while before selling it. It's a pretty cheap upgrade. I just wish my Ultra card was cheaper to buy.

As far as shipping goes... I know that's where some sellers are making up some money on items.

My ISO image worked the first time around without problems. After booting up to Windows a few times, I upgrades to A05. A few days later I did a clean install of Windows for good measure. I found after the initial BIOS update a few drivers needed to be installed again.

All is good now and better with a clean install.

If you are ONLY running the Go6800 Ultra and NOT the 7800 you don't need the 130W Power Supply. It's been running fine for me with my 90W PS.

ktme9300, the reason the shipping prices on ebay are so high is that ebay charges a % of the ending auction price, and doesn't charge anything for the price of shipping. Many people offer 1 cent auctions with like $15 shipping so they don't have to pay an ebay fee but still can make a profit. It's dodgy, but its a way to beat the system in a sense.

Hotrodguru, if you are running the 6800 ULTRA on a 90w PSU, you aren't getting the full capabilities of the GPU. There's a reason the XPS2s came with a 130w PSU, and it's not the LEDs.
post #335 of 1001
Thanks mZimm... I guess that explains the bloated shipping prices.

I was getting worried about my upgrade to the 130w power adapter. I suppose running the 90w adapter would keep it throttled down. Would that be similar to running on battery power?
post #336 of 1001
Is there any particualr reason you couldn't just modify the existing NB heatsink to allow passage of the 2nd heat pipe from the 7800/6800U?

It looks like all you'd need to do is sand down (Dremel tool?) the fins to allow passage. What do you guys think?
post #337 of 1001
I'd say its worth a shot if you have one. Worst case is you ruin it and have to buy another one anyway.
post #338 of 1001
hulk, make sure you're burning is as an image and NOT as a data CD.
dsorrent, it doesnt work. I've tried it before, the card will still run in low power 3D until you use the 130watt adapter.
post #339 of 1001
Ok, Im doing the 7800GTX upgrade and Im at the part where I have to "disconnect the mini-PCI antennae". But, the Dell site doesn't really tell you how to do that. I see them connected and it doesn't look like they are screwed in or anything. Do I just pull on them till they pop off? I don't want to break anything.
post #340 of 1001
The antenna connections come off easily, just a slight pull upward.
