HOW-TO: Upgrade your 9300 with the Ultra or 7800 "Photo Guide" - Page 18

The Dell site has a section devoted to the MiniPCI card, it's listed in the table of contents of the tech manual. Hmm... on second look, it looks like you're asking how to remove the actual antenna? Just pop each off, they attach to the card like buttons on a jacket.

Thanks! Popped them off without a hitch.. I just have bad luck when I go in and yank on things... Not sure how I'd explain that to the wife...

Ok, I got the card removed and all, but I noticed in the back left where the new heat pipe goes, there's 2 rubber inserts glued in there. The fins won't fit if I leave them in, but I can pop them out without too much difficulty. I didn't see in the guide anywhere that it said to remove them. Is this a new addition to the 9300's? I don't think it would be too much of an issue to remove them since the fan will still exaust through the fins.

Anyone else have these rubber things and did you remove them? If you didn't remove them, how the heck did you get the fin block to fit between them?

You have to remove the rubber inserts.

Alright, just finished.... the 7800GTX seems to be running at around 48-49C when idling... Im downloading 3DMark05 now to see what it will heat up to... Im assuming thats around the right temp for idle...

I didnt apply AS5, but I did apply AS Ceramique to the 7800GTX since I had that already and had good results with it on my desktop. What temperatures should I be expecting from the video card anyway?

OK, I've read thru the thread and am confused about one point:

After the install/bios flashing, etc. is all done and done successfully, will the computer be able to be booted using just the 9-cell battery? Or do you have to have it plugged into the 130w power adapter to boot?

You can boot with the 9 cell battery. Even after you do the 7800 install, you can boot with the 9 cell battery, but it will run in "low power mode".

Ok, that's what I was thinking, but wanted to make sure.

In fact, after you boot up on battery and you are in windows, you can plug your 90w power supply in anyway to run off AC instead of battery.

But the CPU/GPU will be downclocked, right?

Smoking fast i9300-7800gtx

Yet another success story. I just upgraded my i9300 to the 7800gtx without any hitches. This GPU is amazing! I couldn't believe the detail that I was missing. My temperature never got above low 80's C, even though I played Battlefield2 for three hours or so.

I am thinking about doing the hardware cooling mod that Mr.K6 did with his. when I get around to it I will post the results on his thread.

To make a long story short- this card was definitely worth the money!

Do you have a link to the cooling mod?

Thanks!

Almost there...

Man oh man... finally got my 9300, nicer looking in person!
I was all ready to do upgrade but when tested adaptor I got from Ebay the thing didnt work
I went ahead and did the bios flash with 9cell batt and all went fine without any problems, only thing is that that my CPU was running at only 787MHz instead of 2.13GHz, so went back to the 9300 original bios until I get a working brick. Seller on ebay hard to get ahold of,might have to file a claim to get a refund. In the mean time I am in the market for a 130 brick if anyone here wants to get rid of one. I'll probably just order one from dell.
Must be patient must be patient
Cant wait till I get this done, btw, awesome laptop, being my first and all, it is beefier than what I thought, now Jay Leno and Conan getting a bit neglected on account of me browsing while in bed instead of watching TV lol!, da wife gets a kick out of me
Im hoping to soon post another succesfull upgrade.

I have searched all 24 threads and I still haven't quite found the answer to a problem I have with this mod.

I have all the components (130 watt adapt, 9 cell batt). I burned the bios onto a blanked cd and when I select the option to reboot the system from my disk drive, the next screen just says insert a bootable disk or press F1 to try again.

I tried it with a usb stick as well and the same message came up. I burned about 4 disk with the bios and no of them worked before i gave up and came here to asked what could I be doing wrong.

Does anyone have any suggestions or comments before I sale the card on ebay lol.
You must follow the instructions through your burning program to boot a bootable .iso, you cannot just simply put the iso file onto a disk and it be bootable.

Thanks. I will try that. I am not really sure what you are talking about as I am a super noob, but I will re read everything about my burning program. I am sure I will figure it out. Thanks again.
