HOW-TO: Upgrade your 9300 with the Ultra or 7800 "Photo Guide" - Page 24

Anyone know what the difference is from the XPS 2 bios and the M170... I went with the XPS2 bios, but just curious on the difference. You said we could use either or?

Since there was no response from my last post, I'm going to try again. What is the difference between the A01, A04, A05 bios of the hacked XPS. If I wanted to use the A05 bios, would I type in IXPS2A05 instead of IXPS2A01.

Yes that is what I had to do but you have to create another bootdisk or you can use the one with A01 on it and put the A05 on another disk. I believe the only difference of the bios A01-A05 is update and fixes. You can find them on dell.com.

I would like to know the difference from the m170 bios and the xps2

I don't know if there's really any differences between the XPS2 and the M170 BIOSes.

As far as the differences between the A01/04/05 versions, you have to flash to the hacked A01 BIOS as it's, well, hacked, to allow you to flash it to a 9300. Otherwise, it detects it's a 9300 and won't allow the flash. Once you've flashed the hacked (A01 BIOS), you can simply go to Dell.com and download the self-executing M170/XPS2 BIOS flashing programs, and update to the latest & greatest version. You don't need to use the bootdisk program or type anything in.

The difference I know of between A04/A05 BIOSes is that the BIOS settings for the cooling fans changed, and the A05 BIOS turns the fans on later, supposedly saving battery life.

Hey folks,

Bought a 9300 from Dell Outlet a week ago, and just yesterday put in my leftover 2.13 Pm CPU and 6800 Ultra (from when I upgraded my XPS Gen 2 to the m170 specs). 3dMark05 went from 642 to 5313! Almost a 800% performance increase for the cost of a 130W power supply and a 9-Cell battery ($120....or about 13% cost increase). Now I have 2 gaming machines...

Anyone want to buy an old Inspiron 5100?

Wow just upgraded from Go to Ultra and what a differance it has made!!
Check out my sig. !
Thanks to all who helped make it. Also id like to say that i didnt use a 9-cell battery for any of it. You have to have the 130 Watt supply after flashing the bois though. It accepted me having a 6-cell and 130 Watt for flashing to XPSGen2!

You have to call Dell parts via their 800 number.

ok thanks

make sure to open up your laptop first and check. You likely already have the new northbridge heatsink. Only the 9300's sold in the first few months needed the new heatsink.

returned my second faulty A00 power brick, then picked up a A01 from a different seller. The new one works, and my 7800 is running at full speed!

i thought that only A02 and newer were working?

it seems that it's false
Im sure someone just said it could cause problems and not that it wouldnt work. But i dont see what there is to revise in a power supply.

Speaking of power supplies...

...I have 2 versions of the PA-13 Power Supply. One is version A00 and the other is A04. Both work just fine with my modded 9300 (now a Gen 2) and my XPS Gen 2 (now an m170). So I'm not sure if a particular version of a power supply is a problem verses just having a bad power supply.

I would like to replace my geforce gp 6800 in my FSC m3438G with the geforce go 7800. As far as i know the powerconsumption, heat and formfactor are no obstacle. But what I would like to know (before I buy a 7800) is why do you guys need a Bios update ? (There is no unofficial Bios for my Notebook)
Really? Formfactor no obstacle between a Fujitsu and a Dell? I thought Dell used a proprietary, modified MXM design. I'd double check this if I were you.
But, if it turns out to be true, you need the BIOS flash to enable the correct PSU/power support for the card. Otherwise, it runs at "low power 3D" settings, which reduces clockspeeds to 250/658, essentially negating the advantage of upgrading the card.

if you don't have a 9300 (or a few other select dell laptops with more modification) you will not be able to upgrade to a 7800 (at least not with the dell 7800).

As far as I know the formfactor DELL is using (the card) is MXM III. Not somthing proprietary.

So can you give me reasons ? As far as I know the size (form) of the card is right. Cooling system is good enougth. PSU is powerfull enougth. It is just the Bios I am concerned about.

I thought you guys just have to do the Bios upgrade because DELL doesn't want people to upgrade their 9300 systems. So they put somthing in the bios which prohibits that.

As far as I know, it is proprietary; a modified version of MXM. Do you know of others who have bought Dell mobile nVidia cards and put them in other notebooks?
No, but I think the main reason for that is, that most Notebooks do not have a MXMIII "slot" or they already have a 7800go. The DELL Card is the only Card which is byable seperatly. (Without Notebook).

By the way, where's the cheapest place to get them ?
