My support confirmed than a GeForce go 7800 would fit, but they gave me that unclear answer. I still don't know wheter I need a Bios upgrade or not.

Your support confirmed the Go7800GTX would fit, but are you sure they mean the Dell Go 7800GTX? I'm sorry to beat a dead horse here, but the Dell version is NOT the standard MXM design. For example, in this thread you can see a pic of the 7800GTX standard MXM design. The connector for the card is on the edge of the PCB. The Dell version is modified, and has the connector (completely different type of connector, BTW) on the bottom of the card.

Reading this post in the same thread, it doesn't even sound like you can use the current Dell 7800GTX (that fits in the XPS/9300/M170) in Dell's own 9400, much less another brand of laptop:

How would you plan to move AND convert the pin-out of the 2 different slots to make a non-Dell card fit?

Hi,
I have a inspirion 9300 with a ati x300 128mb and a 17 inch ultrasharp WXGA (not the WUXGA)
I have a 9 cell bat and the 130W power brick.
I bought a 6800 Ulta on the web and iam waiting for it to get here.
I flashed the XPSGEN2 bios and updated it with the A05 version.

The problem i have is that my screen falls back to 1280x800 (instead of 1440x900) it looks blurred with this bios.

Questions: Will my screen run on 1440x900 with the 6800 ultra?
Why does my system not run on 1440x900 with the X300 128mb when i have the XPSGEN2 bios flashed?
When i hook a CRT monitor up to my 9300 the refreshrate is only 60HZ is this normal (normaly i get 120 HZ from this monitor) and can i change that?

THX

John

You may have an issue with the XPSG2 BIOS not supporting the X300. I don't think this card is even an option w/the XPS. If you don't have the new card yet, there's no benefit to flashing to the new BIOS anyway, so I'd say flash back until you get it.

Thanks for all the tips and advice.

My installation went very smooth.

So where can I get a card which is in our opinion a "real" MXM-III Card? (I still dont belive, that my Card (GeForce go 6800 256 MB DDR1) is a different formfactor than the DELL one).
But I will try to check that.
That's the problem. Unlike desktop cards, mobile versions aren't readily available in retail channels. If your laptop brand doesn't have a model with a 7800GTX, you may be out of luck. Even if they do, there's no guarantee it'll fit in your model (as in the Dell 9300/XPS vs. 9400).

It has to work. Try UNINSTALLING and REINSTALLING your graphic card drivers.

could not find kernel image: linux

Hi all,

I just burnt the iso onto the CD... on startup, after loading a few lines of junk, it spits out an error: "could not find kernel image: linux"

at first i'd thought it was a corrupted file, so i downloaded that boot ISO file again... 3 times. and yes, as u'd guessed it it all gave me the same error. i checked with the nero burnning settings i've currently got it on. Data mode: 1, File system, ISO 9660+joliet, File name: max of 11, char set: standard, no relax restrictions.

Can someone help me out here? i've got my power brick and my 7800GTX sitting in my room the past 2 days with this problem. the urge to kill someone has never been greater.

Ben.

Ben.
I burned it with dvd decrypter (yup really) and i had no problems.
With nero you must open existing compilation (second icon from the left) because its an image file.
Checked it and it works fine.

BTW, Alien, here's a pic of what someone is calling a FSC M4348, showing it has a 6800 in it with the edge connector, verifying for sure you can't use a Dell card in it. I can't find a "4348" on the FSC site, only 3438 or 4438, so I don't know for sure what this person has, but if it's from the same family of notebooks as yours, I'm willing to bet the video cards will be the same.
Donno who wrote m4348 but I know that the Notebook on that picture there is the m3438g or the m4438 (which just has a "HD-Ready" display instead of the one the m3438g has. But bying that screen just doesnt make sens as even a GeForce go 7800 wouldn't be able to play actual games in it's natural resolution). I already agree with you, that the DELL Card wouldn't fit as it is not 100% MXM-III. What I think is sad is, that there is no way I can by a 7800 (or somthing competitive) as pure MXM-III-Card. That was one of the main reasons why I bought the FSC m3438g months ago.
Yep, it sucks. I bought my 9300 thinking my Go 6800 would be the highest card I could have; just lucked out that the 7800 fits.
Do you think there will be a real MXM-III-Card in future ?
From Dell? Probably not. But there's so many other manufacturers out there, someone's gotta be using the "reference" design (like Fujitsu). Just need to find one that offers a high-end card. The thing with laptops tho, is that the BIOS and power supply have to support the power-hungry high-end cards, so this is a factor, too.

And another succesfull upgrade from a X300/128 to a 9600Ultra/256

Al my problems have gone away and my CRT is running 0n 85hz.
Got a score of 5144 with 3dmark05 is that oke?
My X300 got a score of 1323 with 3dmark05 so it is a big step forward.

Thank for all the info you guys provided me with.
Next project will be getting my hands on a 1.6 mhz\400 and pinmod it.

My powersupply is strong enougth. Also the bios should be fine. At lest I would give it a try.
Has really no one an idea, where I can order a MXM-III GeForce Go 7800 ?
this is alittle off topic but does the vanilla nvidia go 6800 (non ultra) require a heatsink for the bottom memory chips? i just had this card (mxm gateway nvidia go 6800 256) upgraded on my gateway 8510gz but the stock x700 64 mb didnt have memory chips on the bottom of the card. Does the dell 9300 with nvidia go 6800 have a heatsink underneath the video card/motherboard also or just the top like mine? Or do the bottom memory chips dont require any type of thermal pads etc... thanks!
