HOW-TO: Upgrade your 9300 with the Ultra or 7800 "Photo Guide" - Page 26

Hi guys. I'm new to this forum, I almost spent the whole day reading through this thread I'm now interested in buying a Dell 9300 and upgrade it with the 7800GTX. I found one in the internet, but with only 60GB-HD and a Pentium M 1.86 Ghz. Now, my questions: Is it easy to exchange this harddisc? Would I loose my warranty? And is the "Pin-mod" possible with this CPU?
Thanks for your replies.

Warranty is not affected when you keep your old video card and pop it in if you ever have to send it back. Once you do it a few times you will be able to do the swap out in 10 minutes or so. Warranty isn't an issue if you pop in another hard drive (and yes it is easy to do). Whenever I have had warranty work done, Dell has asked me to remove my hard disk before shipping the laptop to them. Also, they are not going to care if you pop in another hard drive. Of course, they won't warranty your hard drive.

Also, you might consider Dell Outlet. They still have 9300s for sale. Yoiu just have to check back lots over a period of a few days to find good prices.

EDIT: Try to find one with a 9-cell battery

Inspiron E1705 (9400)

I understand this mod works on the E1705 (9400) as well. Can anyone confirm this? Assuming it does, is there a stipulation on which video card you get to begin with? I suspect the Intel GMA 900 integrated might not allow for this mod. Good chance the ATI is a viable swap and I'm sure the Go 7800 is swapable.

I really want to get this thing ordered ASAP. Thanks.

Actually, it sounds like this mod doesn't work for the 9400/e1705. Check this thread:

Sounds like there is a physical difference, not to mention some possible BIOS mods. However, the 7800 Go (vanilla) is apparently very overclockable. I think you're stuck with that for now.

Can I run the 6800 ultra or the 7800 w/ the smaller battery, not the 9 cell, by using the 130 watt power adapter or do i have to have the 9 cell along w/ the 130 watt power adapter? Is there any way to find out if i have the Northbridge Heatsink inside without opening the case?

Alienware 51m 7700 Geforce GO 6800 256Mb on a Inspiron 9300??

Does anyone have any idea if a geforce 6800 go yanked out of an alienware 51m 7700 would be usable in a inspiron 9300? I understand that the heatsink would have to be removed, so that leads me to my next question... if the card is compatible would the heatsink of my x300 be sufficient to cool the 6800 go(non ultra)?
Thanks

edit: basically would this fit in my 9300...obviously once i remove the casing/heatsink =]

I've have the opportunity to upgrade from the 6800Go to the 7800Go, my question is :
Can i swap the card from the 9300 to the 9400 and vice versa, without changing the power unit and the bios ?
My first idear is yes, am i right ?

WHY DO I NEED dell 130 power watt rev 02 or higher???????

In the instructions i was wondering why is it so important to have a 130watt power brick rev 02??? I read up to page 12 and no one has talked about why is it important to have rev 02. Could you tell me why because on ebay no one seems to be listing what kind of rev version is it and i just want to go ahead and buy 130 power brick without worrying about this stuff.

Finally got a 7800go from a friend. Opened up my 9300 (bought in Feb 2005) and found that I'm one of those unlucky ones who actually needed the damn XPS2 northbridge heatsink. So all that effort of opening up the lappy for nothing... well I guess I got the chance to clean up the chunks of dust around the air vents...

Anyone know where I can get one of those heatsink rather quickly...(don't wanna have to wait for too long as I've waited long enough for the upgrade).

Bal'thzar could get one for me but not until about 3 weeks later.... I'm not sure if I could wait that long with my shiny new go7800gtx lying around my desk. I need somewhere with the heatsink in stock!!

The only suggestion I can give you is to check ebay for a broken 9300, or Gen2, it'll prolly cost a few for it, but you'll get it quickly.

You can also order one from Dell, but that's where Bal'thzar gets his from, so its probably on back order.

If I was you, I'd just wait for Bal'thzar to get them in stock and order from him.

Whats the story on placing a 7800go into a 9300 with a 6800go? I have a strange feeling that the connectors aren't the same and that I missed the 7800 boat when dell stopped offering the GTX through spare parts.

No ideal what the hell you are talking! If some1 gives you a free Geforce Go 7800 GTX, would you take it to replace your bloody old Geforce Go 6800 or you will deny? Lolz

I have successfuly installed 7800GTX in my i9300 last night.
One question though:

When I was putting i nthe 7800 GTX card at the far left corner of the heat pipe when I try to fit it in the slot in my laptop case there were 2 black wedge shaped rubbers glued to that plac eand with them in place I couldn't insert the heat pipe in th eslot so I just took them out and then only it could fit in.

Does any one else also face the same ?

Yes, I had the same issue, two foam/rubber pieces where the second pipe terminates - and yes, I of course pulled them out also

Hey, what version of the XPS firmware is this anyways? When future versions come out, will we be able to upgrade or are we stuck with this version?
