HOW-TO: Upgrade your 9300 with the Ultra or 7800 "Photo Guide" - Page 28

Woot another 9300 Upgraded to the 7800 GTX!! Thanks to Irobertus and all others involved in creating such a complete and thorough thread. Thanks to Bal'thzar for the 7800 GTX.

Total install time was 1 hour, double checking everything I was doing to make sure a perfect install.

Some info: I had the right heatsink already installed, laptop bought about 5 months ago-just if anyone else is wondering, also did this complete install without the correct battery. I am getting the battery asap. At the point when I was first flashed the bios (I said first because I flashed again to A05) I had to remove the battery- got an error that would not work with battery installed. Upon reflashing to A05 (this flash is done from the desktop) It would not do it without a battery installed, Gave error "No battery ". I put back in the 6 cell and it flashed just fine. I also used the complete guide from Irobertus and the bios link he has listed.

How come no one mentioned this...

After my escapade of breaking off my 7800gtx heatsink in attempting to install it in a 9400 and taking the 6800ultra heatsink and putting that one ono instead, I took my broken 7800gtx heatsink and attached anyway to the 6800ultra. My father who's buying my 9300 doesn't want to buy the 130w brick and 9 cell, but he still wants the 6800 ultra. I reflashed the bios to 9300 and upgraded to A05 and put in the 6800 ultra. Guess what it works, even the bios recognizes it. Problem is that it's stuck in throttle settings. So I took the bios and using nibitor pumped up the gpu to 350/900 in throttle mode. Works great on his 90w adapter and 6 cell battery and I've been getting 3dmark05 scores in the 4400+ range. Seeing how 6800 ultras are going now for around $100, that is a VERY cost-effective upgrade for X300's on a budget. Plus even though it's missing the long heatpipe due to the downclock and undervolt the gpu temp rises to only 80C on Oblivion.

Where are you guys buying these parts at, 7800 most importantly? I just did a search on ebay using the part numbers in the OP and I didn't come up with much.

just do a search for "dell, 7800" two pop up right away. I haven't seen the heatsink on ebay. The power adapter (PA-13) has about a dozen listings. The 9 cell is pretty easy to find as well. If you want some dealers names let me know.

Another successful upgrade. Painless really. Got the 7800 gtx from ebay for 350 shipped and PSU for 40 shipped. Now getting ready to put up the 6800 to make some back. Thanks to all who provided the information to do this, it was very helpful and easy to follow.

I was kinda worried about heat so I ended up getting a $30 Targus cooling pad powered via USB and keeps max temp down from 80 to around 70C. (Temps according to NVidia driver, I8KFanGUI reports between 5-10C lower than driver's core temp reading.)

Get between 3200 and 3300 on 3dMark06 if anyone is wondering. Much better than the 1700 i was getting with the 6800 go.

If I have a Dell I9300 with an ATI X300 can I upgrade to the 6800 Go non-ultra (such as this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/NVIDIA-GEFORCE-G...QQcmdZViewItem) without doing all this stuff?
yes you can. aside from missing the heatsink, that is the best card you can get for the 9300 bios.

Its not quite just plug and play. To use the 6800 at its limits you need to have the 130W and the 9cell. Otherwise it would be better to just stick with the x300. And you will need the heat pipes for the 6800, it appears the one in the auction is missing that critical piece.

no, you can put the nvidia 6800 go card into the 9300 without doing anything. I just removed my 6800 from my 9300 to upgrade to XPS Gen2.

I was wondering if the XPS Gen 2 is able to upgrade to the 512 MB Geforce 7900 GTX. Sorry if this question has been asked already.

I tried adding a 7800 GTX card to my 9400. However to fit it in a UK Inspiron 9400 I had to:

Trim the right hand fan rear shround back about 5-10mm on its left hand side including plastic on top and metal plate underneath.

Snap the plastic either side of the left hand heat sink pocket so heatpipe will sit a bit lower

Remove the right hand rear keyboard mounting post as the offset on the notch for this post on the 7800 GTX is different from my old 7800 GO card and it doesnt fit.

So it all works. Fan stuck on first of all but a bit of fiddling fixed that. Will try 7900 GTX as soon as I can get one.

It overclocks 20%+ to 480MHz / 1.25GHz without issue. Scores over 8,300 on 3DMark 2005

ok, now my system recognize the vidcard (NVIDIA Geforce Go 7800GTX 050.070.002.019.012.000 256MB); i have flashed with 05 XPS M170 Bios.
But after it is the same thing: when Windows Logo should appear i have only BLACK SCREEN (like the monitor go off). I can hear that the system starts normally (and i hear the sound for new hardware device found... but i can't see anithing...!:!:!:!:!).
Can someone help me?
