HOW-TO: Upgrade your 9300 with the Ultra or 7800 "Photo Guide" - Page 30

How does a 7800 vanilla (non-gtx) compare to a 6800 ultra in performance?

To upgrade a 9300 to 7800 vanilla would you need to follow the same instructions described in this thread? (new power brick, new 9-cell battery, flash hacked bios, etc etc)

Great thread, I am learning so much...

Does this work for E1705 ?

Hi,

It is possible to upgrade E1705 to a 7800 GTX or 7900 GTX ? is the process the same ?

As this post is huge, is there complete instructions that have been revised ?

Thanks

i wonder too

I kinda have a similiar question: I have a question maybe someone here can help me with. I just bought a 7800 GTX for my E1705 that just plugged and played with no problems and without flashing my bios, now my question is I want to put my original 7800 go vanilla in my girls 9300, Now can I just pull her 6800 out and pop in the vanilla 7800 without flashing her bios since it’s not a 6800 ultra or 7800 gtx or does it still need the XPS bios flash? Can anyone help on this before I open her lappy ?

Another Success. Followed the instructions from the original author of this thread. Was up and running in about an hour. Also installed a bluetooth chip and the Audigy2 PMCIA sound card also. All worked out great. Bal'thazr was my supplier. Talk about a one stop shop. Was able to get everything from him in one package, Power Supply, battery, card, bluetooth chip.

Now to just find time to play my games that I could play while running the x300 ati.

I have an E1705 and had a 7800 vanilla (450/1200)(1.25vmod) simply pulled it out and put in the 7800GTX and booted up right from the start! Two things tho.. 1 You must have a 9 cell battery 2. You must have a 130watt charger (PA-13) without both it wont work! Infact i couldnt even get a stable overclock on my 7800 past 385/950 just not enough juice to keep it running if i put the memory past 925-950, games just would slow down to a halt then system would blink and freeze, and putting the clock anywhere from 395 to 475 would cause it to rapidly overheat past 93' once i bought the 130w no more overheating.

9300 Upgrade

I am looking to upgrade my 9300 with a 7800GTX. I have a couple of specific questions i couldnt find in this thread.

I still have 2 90w power supplies and a 6 cell batt.

If I installed the card with a 9 cell and a 130w what would happen if at the coffee house I tried running the laptop with my left over 6 cell?

Also, are both of my 90w PS's now completely worthless or can I run the card the low power mode and still use these?

Thanks in advance. I hope someones tried this comibination already

It won't start. You'lll get an error message that you don't have the proper power supply when you try to boot it up.

If you boot up with the 9-volt battery and plug in the 90W adapter after startup, it will run in low power mode.

If you're going to do the mod anyway it's worth spending $100 dollars US (what I paid for both combined, including shipping ) on ebay to get the power supply and battery. Maybe you can unload the old power supplies on ebay so it's not a total loss.

Incidentally I got the 7800 GTX off of ebay for $315 USD shipped.

Well there is no way you can run a gtx with a 90 watt PS It will 1. overheat your GPU because the video card will try to request more power and there just is not enough juice there so you will see your temps start rising. When i had my 7800 go in and flashed the bios from 1.1v to 1.3v i could get the gpu up to 400-475Mhz but the temps went to 93 degrees and then the threshold would slow it down, and the fastest stable memory i could get was 950, anything faster would make the games just slow down then the system would freeze. The most stable clock i could get with the 90w was 375-385MHz core & 900-950MHz memory. Once i bought the 130watt i flashed my 7800 with the gtx bios and ran 475/1250 at 93' full load which is fine. As long as it stays below the 95' for the 7800 go it was fine.
As for the battery being a 6 cell Im not sure if it would work or not if it does its not gonna last you too long, gaming atleast. But during normal 2-d windows the card runs at 1.1v so you might get away with it. I Found an extra real brand new dell 9c for $69.95 on ebay aswell, and i was able to buy a brand new Dell brand 130w PS for $19.95 on ebay, so you can imagine the 90w arent worth much, i didnt even try selling mine i just gave it to my girl to use as a back-up for her 9300, hope this helped
By the way be ready to sweat bullets putting in the GTX cause you need to bend the pipes a little and remove a few fins to get it to fit, but when you do it you'll be glad you did, it was easy to open and work on these dell laptops. I dont know about the 9300, but the 9400 i had to cut a metal support peice which was sodered to the mobo,+ i put a new CPU in and that was easy too! good luck

I don't remember having to bend anything to get this card into my 9300, or cut any sort of support out. I did have to pull out 2 rubber stopper looking things that were located just above my CPU heat sink and fan to make way for the second heat pipe, if those are the fins you're refering to.

I didn't have to replace the northbridge heat sink though so maybe that threw some complications I didn't have to deal with.

Mine ran just fine for 2 weeks and never got hot, quite the opposite happened, It ran cool, It idled at 28c and never topped 50c.
It will just run in low power mode.
After I got the correct battery and 130 watt power supply I flashed the bios and temps ran 35-40c idle and up near 75c playing games.
Mine is E1705/9400 not a 9300 the layout is a little different, mine didnt have that triangle shaped heatsink on the northbridge though. it runs about 55-59 in idle and goes about 84-92 during gameplay, but i also overclocked mine quite a bit. but it's still just below my vanila 7800 was, the vanilla ran 69-74 idle and 93' full load but i used the gtx bios and ran 475/1250, I'm now wondering if my vanilla 7800 would fit in my girls 9300? Does anyone know/

Good to know!

Thanks for the replies. So for a sweet upgrade I'll be out 1 6cell batt. No biggie I suppose. I am kicking myself for not getting 2 9cells when I first bought this.

I have performed the upgrade (7800 gtx) to my e1705. It takes a bit of work if you have a chassis that only accepts one pipe.

I certainly had to remove a post, that wasnt that bad. I have tested the e1705 with both a 6800 ultra and 7800 gtx and they both worked fine.

The most time consuming part was bending the pipes a bit to get them to fit properly. I found that removing a fin here and there helped.
Hey Flipblade, you did have to cut-off or sand down that little silver post(it looked like a support for the keyboard or something) that was molded to the mobo, right on the top part of the vid card? I alwats had to remove like 2 or 3 fins on the right side cooler. after all that i'd did fit but barely! Also i felt like i was working on my car when i was done i still had left over parts, lol there were 2 screws that wouldnt go back in 1 underneath the laptop and one of the screws (Right side) that holds down the keyboard. It was all good though because the hinge cover plate helps hold the keyboard down. Opening up the lappy is way easy and working on it was almost like a desktop Intimidating at first at first now i can do it without blinking. I'm telling you what after doing it those 24 pipes really bring fps up in games, also i changed the cpu from a t2300 to a t2500 that was even easier! Now that i know how esay its to self- upgrade this lappy, i see no reason why to kepp my desktop anymorewent up 1000 points with the new card from my vanilia 7800 at same speeds 450/1200!!!

[quote=zawam]Ive installed the 7800 GTX into my 9300 and its recognized as new hardware by WinXP. Ive uninstalled all drivers using DCleaner associated with my ATI X300. When I try to install new NVIDIA drivers i get:

The setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit.

If anyone has seen this how do you proceed next?
Thanks,

Download one of the drivers from Tweaks R Us and install by double clicking on the downloaded file on your desktop (or wherever you save it)after following your above mentioned steps. If your still having problems follow the steps here http://www.tweaksrus.com/forums/inde...showtopic=3104

What drivers are you using, The ones from Nvidia's website wont install using instashield, ether download the dells M170 gtx drivers or (and this works with any driver set for the gtx go) Download the drivers u want to use Right click the blue install exe extract files to a new folder on your desktop, goto control panel or properties by right clicking your desktop manually install drivers by have disk option, direct it to the .inf file and it will force the install. Not only will it put the drivers in, it will also install the nvidia control panel, everything will be exactly the same as if you just used the installation program. It has worked for me every time, even when i had my 7800 vanilia flashed with the gtx bios, it worked then too.

Oh by the way does anyone know if i can just pop in my old 7800 go Vanillia in my girl's 9300 and take her 6800 vanilla out without flashing her bios, I figured maybe it could because the vanillia 7800 requires only a 90w PS and the clock speeds and it's bios are similiar to a 6800 vanillia. I had no problems just switching out my vanilla 7800 go with the 7800 GTX in my E1705 without flashing bios after buying a 130w PS, can someone let me know as soon as possible before i start modding her 9300 case to get the 7800 vanillia to line in right, its in pieces right now in front of me, LOL

I don't know if it was asked since I didn't read all 40 pages. I just did that, but with my ik9fangui and the xps bios it won't detect some of the heat sensors, mainly the videocard one. Can you use any xps bios. I was wondering because I was going to try a newer xps bios to see if I can get my sensors back.
