HOW-TO: Upgrade your 9300 with the Ultra or 7800 "Photo Guide" - Page 34

Just got it and installed it. One heat pipe (the long one) had gotten a little bend right next to the copper-grill, but I could straigten it out allmost without deformaties on the heat pipe. Gfx card works fine... BUT... The PSU is a rev. A00 and NOT a rev.A02 as mentioned on the first page of this guide.

I was promissed that it would be a rev.A02 but it isn't. The sales guy said that the part number "PA-1131-02D" ment that the "02D" was revision 2. There is no way to return it, and the postage fee would also make it less attaractive to me. So now I just have to figure out if I'm runninng in low power mode or not. I have to unplug the PSU when I boot, and insert it when the WinXP load screen appears. Otherwise the computer won't boot at all - just saying "90W powersupply detected. You need a 130W power supply. Hit F1 to shut down". If I'm running on low power I will have to buy a new one (again!)

The nVidia control pannel reports that the current power level is maximum, and I can adjust the scroolbars to maximum performance.

My temperature says 110Celsius when booting up, and it seems a bit hot to me.

Does any of you know how to check the power level and the current heat function?

What does it say on the actual power supply? Mine for example doesn't say PA-1131-anything. Mine says PA-13 family.

It's possible that the person from whom you bought it from didn't know what they were talking about. Especially given that you're getting a 90W power supply message I think you may actually have a 90W power supply.

110C is way too hot. My 7800 GTX doesn't crawl above 69 C and I have it O/Ced to 445/1200. If you're not getting enough power I don't know why it would be running so hot.

69 C as read from where though? The nV control panel and ATI tool both report easily 10*C hotter than i8K does...

Still, how do you get your card to run so cool (even if it is +10*C) at those speeds? I have reapplied AS5, but the temps still get up there (for instance, at 435/1200, ATI Tool's artifact checker is pushing her to 95*C, even with i8K setting the fans to always high...)..

yeah that 69 deg is through fangui. I have my laptop set up thusly: I have AS5 on my GPU (make sure that the layer of AS5 isn't too thick, and that you've removed the foil from the heatsink, and that you've applied it to the heat sink to fill all the rough surfaces, and that you cleaned the heat sink and chip top thoroughly). I have CPU fan set to come on high at 40 C and the GPU fan to come on at 55. When I did my conversion I had 2 little rubber stoppers in the place where the second heat sink goes, I attached those to the bottom of my case and have the back end propped up ~1.5-2 cm.

I lost about 3-4 degrees by putting the stoppers on. I can't tell you how much I lost with the AS5 because I applied it before I booted the 7800 up the first time.

Keep your fans clean.

Other than that, all chips are not created =. Maybe I got lucky.

I get no artifacts and these temps stay constant over hours and hours of wow and oblivion.

I'm on BIOS A05. I get 3dMark05 scores around 7439. I've been thinking about boosting up to around 460/1250, but I'm a bit worried (even though the tool says optimum is like core is like 470).

Hello my first post here and already i saw this excellent topic, it would be a hell of an upgrade for my x300 128 mb

i can order the power supply from dell easily, but sigh why are there so much more choices in the united states, it would cost much less i think if i could buy one from ebay in america

does anyone know where i could buy the 7800 go/gtx here in europe
i can order it from ebay, but there's only one that ships to europe and the shipping price isnt that cheap, is there a way i can order this from dell in europe
or somewhere else to buy it
any help would be appreciated

Great topic

welcome to the forum.

If you can, I'd say buy from ebay. I bought all of the components for my upgrade from ebay and paid (after shipping) about 55-60% what I would have paid if I had bought from dell.

It sucks that the card costs so much to ship overseas. Perhaps if you try to contact one of the other sellers they might be willing to ship it to you (and for cheaper).

i dont have much choice i think to buy it on ebay, ebay shipping rates sometimes suck, like for example i know a ebay shop(they say its in hong kong) but i'm positive its in the netherlands, a neighbour country from me, sometimes the shipping costs are more than the item, it's a shame certainly because they sell nice stuff

thanks for the quick reply

Hey I am struggling getting the boot disk to work could some one help me figure this out. I am using Nero to burn and so far I have screwed up about 15 disks. Not a single one worked. When I booted with the cd it either started normally or the computer showed the error “dos can not read” or something close to that. But can some one give me some hints on how I did it before. I have tried every option I could think of and now I am thoroughly fed up!
Ok, this is how i made my boot disk... I formated a boot diskett by floppy, so i had a floppy boot disk, then i opened up nero and chose CD(boot) burning feature and chose nero image checked off, then i burned all the files from the floppy to a cd in that way. Poped it in my laptop hit f12 and went right in calandra dos mode, Note i used my desktop to make the disk by right clicking A drive and choosing to format and make a dos boot diskett with XP, but it works fine and i have used that same disk to flash 4 different geforce cards on my dells; 7800,7800GTX,7900GS, & 7900GTX and nvflash understands its dos enviroment so i know it works.

Thanks, i finaly got it working after 15 cd's write after i read your advice. i read your advice.

Cool deal, did you flash your card?
i am going to do this upgrade, got the 6800 ultra in the mail, waiting for the power supply. bios is all flashed up and ready to go.

this upgrade will be worth it for me... as i have an ati x300 64mb card!

i ran 3d mark 06, and i got a lowly pathetic score of around 180!!!

thank you so much for this ingenius idea!

count me as another x300 to 6800 ultra upgrade, had the 6800 for a month and now i've got a 7800 coming to me in the mail. Though i've been too cheap and kept my 6 cell battery, anyone have a 9 cell theyre willing to sell? if anyone needs the 6800 ultra, pm me
post #674 of 1003
Just sold my last 9cell for $92 to someone on here last week, Im getting a new shipment SEPT. 1st tho, if you want to check me out then

hi, im new to this forum, i just found it was reading up and joined today, but i did not get about the upgrade, everything was clear, but at the moment, i have a 130 watt adapter, and i dont have the battery or the money to get a new one is it possible to just use the 130 watt and the 6 cell battery at the moment? thanks

EDIT: and by that i mean, to get the "modding bug" out of me i wanted to run the conversion so as this machine is stock, with vanilla 6800 go if it would be possible to get by like that untill i get money for parts to upgrade (batt and 7800)
you can do pretty much anything o\c wise with the 130w thats the most important thing to have, there is somewhere on these forums that explain hot get your 6800 up to 6800 Ultra speeds, and when you get any of the 7xxx series you'll be fine aswell
post #677 of 1003
you can use the 6 cell battery fine, just as long as you have AC power to turn the computer on first. Whenever I turn my computer on, i have to take the battery out boot on AC and then i can put the battery in after the windows loading screen comes up. Afterwards if you unplug from AC power the computer still works fine.
ok nnow i have a 130watt charger, but its rev a00
it read as 130 and worked
however, after a certain amount of time if i reboot it reads as 30watts to the system, i managed to go someware and use a different plug and it worked, it also worked when i flashed it so i figured it would be fine, what should i do?
There are more than one type of 130w PA-13 Family power supplies out there, so when looking to buy one becareful to buy the correct one prefeably you should be looking for a M170, M1710, XPS Gen2 power supply, I recommend Model HP-AD130B12P Rev A02 or something similiar to that for people with 9300,9400,E1705 wanting to put a 7800GTX or 7900GTX in their laptops and for 9400\E1705 owners are fine just keeping their PA-10 90w, Because I had a 9400 with a single piped 7900GS 375\1000 stock, and overclocked it to 625\1250 and ran better with the 90w, I ran the 130w with it to try it out and acctually max temps were 2-3 degrees higher with the 130w, strange.

Lol this is crap, i bought the 6800 ultra from ebay this tuesday and the same day i bought the power supply on dell since it was 20 % off (it's always nice to be sure it's the right thing and that it's brand new)
Now the seller has sent the card and it will arrive on monday, and dell will take two weeks to sent the power supply,
they are so slow
Cant wait to open the laptop
BTW: i'm a bit confused about the drivers and stuff, so i first have to flash my bios, but do i have to uninstall my ati drivers before i plug in the 6800 ultra, or can i do this afterwards

Greetz
