7900 GS will Not work in a 9300, XPS gen2, Or XPS M170. It will fit but your 9300 won't know what it is. There is no support for it in the 9300 bios.

So even if I get hacked version of XPS bios (the one that is discussed in this topic to make work 7800GTX on I9300) it still will not work ?
NO. The hacked bios gives the 9300 the support for the 6800 Ultra and the 7800 GTX. That's all.
The only option is to modify the Dell bios in the 9300 for support for the 7900 cards. It has been talked about but no one has been able to make it work.
It would be more promising if the original hacked 9300 bios was actually modified by inserting compatibility for other cards into it but thats not how it worked. Its essentially just an XPS2 bios tricked to be able to flash on a 9300.

Thanks guys for the answers .... So it looks like I won't be able to put that beast into I9300 ... Well ... it's okay ... I will then sell or trade it to get 7800GTX

P.S. Does anybody know when I will be able to post/reply in Selling/Wanted thread ?

Hi

So I updated the graphics card for my Inspiron 9300.. Lots of money, and lots of time wasted, and now I'm having huge issues with my laptop. First off, I ended up buying two Dell AC adapters (both rev02) and with both I get an incompatibility error when I start my laptop.. Now, I get around this by unplugging the AC and pluging it back when I'm inside windows... good enough

Well, now I have another problem. In windows, if I were to even drag a window and pan it around, I would lose my display .. I would get these diagonal patterns covering my screen. and then after a few seconds the screen turns pitch black.. I've tried different things and everytime I seem to get the same result.

The drivers that I'm using for the 7800 is the ones recommended here for the initial installation of the card.. I've also tried others but to no avail.

I've flashed my bios more than twice but the same result.

I've even bought a new 9 cell battery even though I already had one to begin with(but it was functionally weird)

7800 card: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWN:IT&ih=005

My spec:

inspiron 9300

pentium 2.13(something like that)
2gigs of ram
initial graphics card was geforce 6800

Any help is greatly appreciated!

if you put the 6800 back in and everything is fine, then I would say you might have a bad video card
post #910 of 1003
Wow, that would suck really bad.. But I'm still trying to figure out how to get my laptop to recognize the AC.. It still isn't rcognizing it at the startup of my computer, so I'll have to keep unplugin it.. But also,it doesn't seem to be charging the battery either when I load into windows...

As i've said before, I bought two of these AC adapters, both dell, both rev02, and both give me same result..

....*sigh*

2 things to try....
(1) switch back to the 9300 a05 bios! It should recognize the 7800gtx and shouldn't give you the problems with the power supply you are having
(2) try a different power adapter. I think when I did this, I had a rev01

Yes, try atwoodfan's suggestion. That power adaptor (at least with the XPS BIOS) is gonna cause some major throttling issues with the GPU and CPU.

Cool, thanks.. I've ordered another AC straight from Dell.. It should arrive monday, I'll get back to you then

Okay, don't even know what to think ...

Got the Geforce Go 7800 GTX of the ebay. Installed it on the I9300 that has latest BIOS rev.05 and 9 cell battery, regular 90W AC adapter. Turned the laptop on. POST went okay.

I went to BIOS to check what is the status of the card. It says " unknown videocard", however, detects amount of VideoRAM, displays GPU model - something like G70.... and then there is like very long number after it, with dots.

Okay ... booting to Windows XP. OS recognized it as 7800 GTX and I downloaded 84.63 off the nvidia web , since it told that this is correct version of the driver for Go7800GTX.

Done that ... Run setup.exe in the driver directory - can't find the hardware , setup will now exit ! WTF ??? downloaded modded INF file from "laptop video2go " - driver installed with no problems...

After reboot went to the properties of the driver and checked clocking options - by default it puts 400MHz/1.06GHz (when Manual overclock is checked). Clicked "Detect optimal settings" - stays on the same frequency.

How can I check if the card is running on all of its power ? I am asking it because first, I still use 90W AC and it charges battery just fine . Laptop works just fine when plugged to the AC adapter. And it was told that 130W adapter is required.

I suspect it is running in low mode ? and why is BIOS not recognizing it ? Any ideas ?

Thanks.

have you flashed your bios to the hacked xps1 bios yet?

if not, flash it, then update to the latesr A05 bios for the M170 from dells site

you do need the 130watt psu to boot with it plugged in, and to get the card running in full power, the 90watt does do to recharge the battery though when normal computing

If after all that the cards kaput, and you need a replacement, pm me next week as I may just convert this one back to an 6800go and give it to the kids, so id have an 7800gtx and a newer dell 130watt psu for grabs

good luck

Thanks for the answer . I ran couple of tests in games and it looks like it is not working in full power. I should receive adapter by the end of the week , so I 'll update BIOS and see what happens...

P.S. I thought that I can still be able to run 7800 GTX on I9300's BIOS A05 as long as I have 130W AC .... looks like I am wrong ...
ahh no, i also thought you could after replacing the card after getting a new motherboard recently and then was wondering why bioshock was running like treacle..

yes it works on an 130watt but run 3dmark6 and you'll get a shock
still have to flash it, then use the m170s, and then everythings cool

I max out @ 75deg C after 3hrs bioshock with fresh artic silver5 on the GPU and fangui set fans on high, fear ran high 90s
post #918 of 1003
Just try the latest 9300 BIOS first. If it doesnt work then use the XPS BIOS.
run 3dmark 05 and post your scores; if they are in the 6500-7000 range, the card is running full speed, if they are in the 4500-5500 range, the card is running in low power mode.

Buy the 130W PS and try that BEFORE you flash to the hacked xps bios. If you have the 130W brick and you are still getting scores indicating low power mode, then try the flash to the xps bios.

Okay ... tested it in 3DMark 2005 with Forceware(84.63) driver, 90W AC and all settings maxed out. the score is 3956 so obviously it is running in low-low mode!! Will wait 'tll AC comes in to test it with 130W psu then will update with XPS bios and run the tests again...

P.S. Did anybody noticed that under heat sink of this card there are like blue pieces of I don't know what? It looks like a blue bricks or blocks and when I touch it, it feels like a cooling paste but it shaped as a blue rectangular block. There are 6 of them under the metal plate, between metal and board and they all are on top of the black microships . Seller says that he never overclocked the card ... hmmm makes me wonder....
