HOW-TO: Upgrade your 9300 with the Ultra or 7800 "Photo Guide" - Page 47

Here's an update on my situation.. It worked!! So it was the AC after all.. I would recommend people to get their ACs straight from dell. I bought two that didn't work. Anyway, looks like it's functioning so far. Thanks for everyone that helped!

How much does this whole package for upgrading an i9300 to a 7800 cost these days? I have a 9 cell battery but I'm assuming I need the AC adapter, the 7800 and maybe some other stuff. I have a 6800 go currently. If it costs anything more than 100-150 I don't think I'll attempt this; the 7800 is getting old now too but it's worth upgrading from a 6800 go if it's cheap.

Thanks.

Good luck finding the 7800GTX under even $300. The card is ridiculously overpriced, however, your goals were still a little too high imo. I just sold my 6800 Ultra for $150 here (ppl pay less here than ebay) and I had plenty of offers. You have to remember that you are dealing with notebook parts and they dont come cheap.

Power Adaptor: $40
9 Cell (not really necessary imo but useful): $100
GPU: 6800U 200- ; 7800GTX 300+

Thanks for the info. Definitely not worth it for me then. My processor is getting old too (pentium M 1.60 Ghz) so I'll prolly just start saving up for a new laptop with a 8800m gt which should out by then.

there is no way to get the cost of modding to $100-150
. I bought 7800GTX for $380 (around $370CAD) and there was the fight for that card - really. So the total cost is about $500 including all the shipping and taxes charges. I take it is worth this investment ? Whenever I read responses people saying that 6800->7800GTX is awesome conversion and worth spending half a G.

anyone wanting a 7800GTX plus a new 130watt PSU to do this mod, I am selling mine

There are no links to ebay listings allowed on this site, but the listing is due to start at 9pm Eastern time tonight 6th November, search under "dalbeag", my user name on ebay

Good luck to all

bump, its open, I cannot link to the auction due to site rules, but if your interested, do a search on "7800 GTX for Dell 9300" and it'll pop up

I think Toshiba has one gaming laptop already out with 8800 GT in it. I guess... or was it 8600GT ... not sure but it cost like 3G to buy one.
Just google it ...

just a shamless pump. my auction for 7800gtx and psu ends friday evening

got my M90 yesterday, just installing vista 64bit - no problems so far, ill do some bench marking later. Wanted to try 64bit after reading around. First impressions good, the t7600 is fast in normal computing but not much greater than the pimped out 9300, only when dual cores (seem to) kick in. Giving the wife the 9300.

Not sure what is happening but my score in 3dmark05 is 5670 on maxed out settings( 1440x900, 4x Antiliasing and Anisotropic 4x)

BIOS is XPS Gen2 rev05. ForceWare drivers 87.25 from Laptop Video2G0. PSU 130W rev.07.GPU -7800GTX @ 400MHz Core/1.06GHz memory. 2Gb ram DDR2. I suspect it is because of CPU - it is 2.0GHz PentiumM not pin modded.

Any clues?
sounds about right for maxed settings; on default settings (1024x768, noaa/af), you should get in the 6600-7000+ range
post #932 of 1001
isn't that standard factory clocks breakeRR ?

you should be able to do 440/1150 comfortably

you'll need to apply coolbits2 to your registry (available from guruof3d website) or unlock your card with Juan's method on the sticky in this forum

I was getting about 6700 mark 5 with the free version of 3dmark5 and a 1440x900 screen with my non pin modded processor 1.73 went over 7000 with the pin mon to 2.27

so yep, your low right now and have plenty of head room to move into

I got basically the same scores from dell (think it was 87.69 and tony's mobile force xp drivers)

good luck

Hi guys, this is my first post and may be a bit on the long side. Just got a couple of questions to ask but mostly about this upgrade so thought i'd stick it in here!

I have a Dell XPS2 Does that make it a M170?

I have the Pentium-M 780 (2.26Ghz) Is this the fastest CPU I can use? If so how can I overclock it?

I have 2Gb Ram, Thats the maximum right?

I have a nVidia Geforce Go 6800 Ultra, whats the best card I can replace it with? If it is the 7800 GTX mentioned in this thread will it work in my UK Spec Laptop as they only seem avalible from USA?

Thanks for any help!
yes x4 lol

some pinmodded to 2.4 but the chips that do it are rare and expensive (not all are capable)

M170 = XPS2 with 7800gtx instead of ultra

cheers

Thanks for the reply, ZX81.

SO let me get it straight - if I got OC drivers (Forceware 87.25 from Laptop Video2Go website) do I need to flash my 7800GTX with hacked BIOS in Juan's thread ? Or get coolbits2 from Guru3D ?

I think no , but I am a n00b in this kind of questions. The thing is I am able to change the frequency of the GPU core and video ram , right from the nVidia control panel. So I think it is all what I need.

Also I have increased Core/Ram frequency to 440/1150. That bumped up the score to 6870 on default settings in 3dmark 05 Sounds good to me! Should I try more? WHat are the optimal settings without a risk of burning the chip ?

I am going to try 97.92 NBF mobile force driver today.
Updates... Looks like I was wrong. I was able to adjus the settings of GPU through the hacked drivers from Laptop Video2Go BUT the settings went back to default afetr clicking OK button

So , I re-flashed GPU BIOS with Juan's version and lo and behold! When I changed the settings in the nVidia Control Panel - they stayed there . No more resets back to defaults!!

I will be grateful if someone could tell what drivers are they using with 7800GTX Go and what frequencies are optimal? 440/1150 seems to be OK ... but maybe there is something more ?

Thanks ...

Hi, congrats

see post 3 in this thread, achilles has a download for ATI tool

http://www.notebookforums.com/thread207479.html

slowly increment the clocks and run the test so the cube rotates, when you start to see green squares - thats artifacts ie your GPU is brain farting and 'missing' a calculation, for want of a better description. Thats your cue to back off a little. If your temp gets too high over time, I foget what the thermal limit is on your card something like 100deg C - its in your nvida panel somewhere, then the card 'throttles back' reducing your clock settings

remember that the second clock is half of what it is actual ie 600=1200 in reality

from memory I think 450/1250 and TIME (for the temp to approach throttle) is a good top to aim for, depending upon the individual card

man its ages since I did this so I could have somethings wrong, be good if someone else more current chips in. I even got the juan mod upside down in what it does, and deleted that post the other day.

*think its xp only.

cheers
did some testing with ATI tool. The max settings for core and memory I got on my 7800GTX were : 485MHz for the Core and 1300MHz for the memory.

Above it - there are artifacts all over the place.

Currently i got 440/1160 and it works good. With no load ... Card has about 52-54 C, after playing 3 hr of Half Life2 gets high 60 ~ almost 72 i registered. I 'll buy good thermo compound from local shop and apply it to the card just to mae sure it is not overheating. I think this card still has factory thermo paste in it.

The link on the first post of this thread does not work for the hacked XPS bios. Does anyone know where I can download the hacked bios?? A new link??

Thanks!
