Got my 9300

Got my laptop a few days ago but aint been able to get back on here to ask advice!! lol.

First off, can someone please explain to me what the difference is between the O/s back up program that you burn onto cd from your desktop and an actual O/s cd with the key on it etc. Im guessing i cant reformat and use this backup cd and the key on the underside of my laptop for a clean instal..... no?

Second, what cd's can i ask for if i phone up Dell? I got a bunch of ISP ones with my laptop and the only other one seems to be Dell Experience 3.0, i thought i would get more than this but everything else was pre-installed.

Third, going back to the reformat thing. I have heard of you have an old O/s cd and use the new key under your laptop then you can do a clean installation this way, is this true?
If it is true then the problem i think i might have is, the cd i have is Win XP Pro SP1 but the laptop i have came with Win XP Home SP2. Is this a problem?

Im new to the laptop game and dont want to jump in changing things and realise i have to send it back when/if i mess up.

Thanks,

I had the same problem, just got my 9300 today and reformatted. I only got an AOL cd and Wordperfect CD with my computer. Called Dell and they are sending me a WinXP Cd, driver discs, application discs, everything. Give them a call they should hook you up.

As for installing a different OS, I ordered this laptop with XP Media Edition and am running XP Pro right now. I think if you have a Windows CD that was purchased with a Dell system, it will "detect" that it is being installed on a Dell and won't prompt you for a registration code...that has been my experience at least. Hope this helps, enjoy the 9300, I love this machine so far!

Try to chat with Dell support and ask fro all the CDs ----- when I had called, the guy who picked up refused to send me the CDs. So the next thing I tried was to chat and got the CDs in 2 days. In all probability they would not send you the Cyberlink Power DVD and Sonic Record Now in the first batch( don't ask me why, but that is what they did to me). So once again I tried the chat thing and they send me the CDs in two days. You might have to sample different persons to hit the home run ---- some guys just refuse saying there is some new dell policy blah blah of not sending the CDs.

Tried calling at lunchtime. Got through and asked for the cd's..... got the 'new policy' line you were talking bout but then she said she would transfer me through to Tech Support and i could ask there. She put me through but it said id be waiting 10 mins in line and i had to go back to work so i hung up. Will try the chat (im guessing you mean the online thing where you have to put in my service tag number is it?) when i get home later.

I have had a hell of a time getting the CDs from them. Right when I ordered it I talked to 4 people, the first three said no and the last one said yes. She said it would come with my laptop. Didn't come. So I talked to them again on friday and they said they were sending it, still not here. I would be more irritated if I didn't have a MCE disk I could use to reinstall.

Easy. Chat with them and DEMAND, not ask for a copy of the OS you've paid for.

According to MS EULA you must have a physical disk if you have a serial number. What Dell does is a clear violation of MS EULA.

They are trying to save under $1 on sale getting $$$ from us. Moreover, I suspect all the bloatware manufacturers pay Dell as well to have their software preinstalled on Dell machines. So Dell probably is making a lot more than just difference between cost and retail.

The Dell burn-your-own XP OS cd is the same as the Dell OEM XP cd, except that the CD that you burn yourself has all of the drivers slipstreamed into it.

So, of course you can use it to create & delete partitions, reformat, clean install, etc.

There is no need to enter the key with either type of Dell XP install CD.

So, IMO, you really don't need to hassle with Dell about getting an XP cd. I didn't, anyway...

Well a bit of persistancy paid off, called again, after talking to one guy for bout 20 mins and in the end not getting the cd (he told me the control key and F11 to wipe everything from my computer and start over installing everything i wanted on myself).
Then he put me through to his line manager to 'rate' him or whatever the guy asked if i was satisfied and i just mentioned i would rather install the cd's myself but if this way works then ok. Glad i mentioned that part.... he patched me through to someone else to do a diagnostics test, i guess thats to cover their ass in case i mess up the installing myself.
Long story short (and about 40 mins on the phone!!) should be getting the XP Home, Driver and DVD software cd's on Friday.

Great to hear you got it!!! Just to bad some have to go through the problems and all have to ask

Hi Timmy,
use the online chat. Dell most probably would not send the Sonic DVD writer and Cyberlink PowerDVD in the first batch. Just go through the chat again ( may be a couple of times of trying) you should be fine ----- just tell the friendly guys how good they are.
