just kidding...

anyway, i dont think were going to disagree that the x300 cant play the newer games like FEAR,AOE3 or BF2 at 12800x800 with AA, let alone the 1680x1050 most of you 6000 owners have. i cant even play AOE3/FEAR/BF2 at 1400x1050 on my desktop with a 6600gt. the x300 is not a bad card, but with or without it, the m140 is NOT a gaming notebook, and that is dissapointing to me.

Sounds like they're diluting the XPS brand by having the M140 there. Making XP MCE standard shouldn't be enough to make it an XPS. Should've just stuck with 630m.

It's a bit on the heavy side at 5.47lb considering it's only with a 6-cell battery and integrated graphics. But the same goes for the 700m and 6000. Only thing going for it will be price.

I was hoping Dell would break the low res trend for 14" widescreens and offer a higher res screen. Since it only has integrated graphics gaming wouldn't be a priority for any buyer, but a high resolution screen could've drawn the people that currently have older 14" SXGA+ laptops looking for a widescreen replacement in the same weight category without sacrificing desktop real estate (which there currently is NONE). Comparing a 14" 600m/D600/T42 to my 15.4" Z70Va it's a big jump in size and weight when actually holding and comparing the laptops, even though on paper it's only about a pound difference in weight.

Ive been waiting for dell to bring out a a 14" widescreen laptop, but now that is out, it looks like I am going to be looking for a different laptop manufacturer, I dont want integrated graphics, or such crappy resolution

my 15" Inspiron 8200 has 1600X1200 resolution, why cant they make a 14" screen with like 1400X1000. Its going to be such a hard decision to switch cause dell's CompleteCare warranty has treated me so well.

I'm looking for a 14" widescreen unit for a work maching that will have to be carried with me to all service calls. N Ogaming but heavy PDA usage. I can't find any other 14" widescreen laptop with a higher resolution rating thant the M140.

Other units I'm looking at are the HP Special Edition L2105NR, and the Gateway MX3560. I want to stay with an Intel processor vs the AMD.

I have to agree not having a discrete graphics option on that really blows. I'd drop my 6000 in a second for the 140 if it did. The 6000 is just too heavy for me.

forgive me for being dense...but what is an express card slot? and does the 630m/xps140 have the 5 in 1 media card reader? I looked in the specs but am somewhat technically challenged,...I just want to be able to put my dig camera card in like I can on my 6000

thanks...

re: expresscard

The PCMCIA has developed a replacement for the present CardBus standard, called ExpressCard (originally codenamed Newcard), which is claimed to be faster and less complex than CardBus. The name Newcard was at one stage potentially to be used for this. The host device supports both PCI Express and USB 2.0 connectivity through the ExpressCard slot, and each card uses whichever the designer feels most appropriate to the task. The cards are hot-pluggable.

ExpressCard supports two form factors, ExpressCard/34 (34 mm wide) and ExpressCard/54 (54 mm wide, in an L-shape - the connector is the same width (34 mm) on both). Standard cards are 75 mm long (10.6 mm shorter than CardBus) and 5mm thick, but may be thicker on sections that extend outside the standard form factor - for antennas, sockets, etc.

Thanks reldavidson...so I just buy an adapter and stick my media in....ok....that'll work....

one more question about the 630m/xps140....on the dell site is says the 6000 is better at "multimedia" than the 700m or 630m/xps140...what exactly does that mean?

The 6000 has better speakers for playing music, etc. than those others, and it also has a dedicated graphics card option, which would help for video editing or whatever.

Neither the I6000 or the M140/630m have the built in subwoofer so sound should be about equal. Although, the M140/630m has a better 24-bit SigmaTel chip while the I6000 has the older 16-bit chip.

I will

The sales rep was really trying to talk me into the 6000. Not sure why, he basically told me they were the same system but the m140 is smaller and has a smaller screen. I didn't want to have to call to order, but the system wasn't taking my discount code.

All said and done I paid $1487 and will get a $100 dell gift card in the mail.

I just noticed today the price on the M140's went up $89 from yesterday. Looks like they're "giving away" a Dell DJ Ditty that's valued at...you guessed it...$89!

The base price moved from $999 to $1088 b/c of the "free" Ditty

Dell is stupid like that sometimes.

"Basically the same system?" Not really, unless you need the better graphics of the 6000.

As far as the price going up $89, when I checked the configuration, it had the DVD burner selected, but no longer offered as a free upgrade, so when you downgrade to the CDRW/DVD combo drive, price moves back to $999. Might have changed since this morning, but that is what I noticed.

BTW, I ordered an Inspiron 630m from the Dell Small Biz US site, $739 after 20% discount code, shipped for $807.55 after tax and ship. I already have the upgrades in hand (1 GB PC2-4200 533Mhz Ram, 60 GB 7200RPM Drive, Bluetooth 350), so I just got the base config.

Will post my impressions when I get it.

I didn't think to check if they changed anything else. The Ditty was pretty obvious.

I'm glad I ordered when I did if they dropped the free dvd burner upgrade. The DVD burner is more important to me than the Ditty.

I'm anxious to hear your review when yours arrives, NYCScorpio. Before I came here I didn't know the M140 and the 630m were the same system.

I would like to order one today but cannot get the coupons to work. Tried all in the thread, no luck. Would you mind telling me the one you used?

Thanks,
