Video drivers that work, other than latest Sager?

I am presently running the latest sager drivers ( 8.04 ) from their site. I have tried the ATI Mobility 5.10's and the Omega's released Oct. 25th, but they do not seem to work without problems?! First I get a black screen on first reboot... second boot, the screen defaults to a 640 x 480 16 bit and is all fuzzy. After I set the resolution to 1680 x 1050 32 bit, it looks great.. but when I reboot/restart XP, the screen res has two black bars on either side and the resolution max's out on 1400 x 1050 32 bit. I have no idea why one sec it works, then after a reboot it doesnt go back to 1680 x 1050 automatically?! This happens using both the Omega's and ATI's latest.
Anything I am missing during installation?
I have .NET 1.1 installed and everything works well with the latest sager ( old drivers ).

Scale back to the 8.0 Drivers Ruffy and see what happens.

Personally, I've never updated my drivers (still using the default 6.xxx??), and this seems to be one of the reasons why.

I recently had to replace the hard drive so I am re-building Windows. I find that I am having the same problems with the Omega and drivers from the ATI site. I tried using older versions which I know were working but still had the same problem. I have put in the drivers from Sager's site which seem to work but I'm concearned they are not going to be sufficient to run my games. Any ideas to what may behind this?

There is a version of the 8.09 driver for the 8790 on the Pro-Star website:
