choppy video (wmv/avi) on xps2

Thread Starter
Running the xps2 with 2gb ram and a hitachi 60gb 7200rpm hd, and it seems to access the HDD a whole lot (the indicator light starts going crazy and I can hear the HD 'working').

Most noticeably, is when I open up a video file. I've tried a 1gb .avi file and a 20mb .wmv file in cyberlink powerdvd and windows media player respectively, and they both play video that is intermittently choppy.

The HDD was formatted, partitioned, and got a clean install of winxp professional, then the latest dell drivers/dell quickset loaded on so I dunno if it could be a driver problem. The ram is Crucial, and tested in memtest overnight when I got it with no errors and it was working fine with my old HD. Anything anyone can suggest? Like I said it's a clean install so I don't have many processes running, apart from trendmicro's pc cillin.

I sometimes get that problem too, sometimes not. Maybe try defragging? Also could have something to do with speedstep

what 'codecs' are you using?

try using ffdshow
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm

its a divx/xvid/all codec that sits below any player and does the decoding
its freeware and its GREAT

I get that sometimes as well. It is mostly when I download a file of crappy quality. I think the graphics card is trying to improve the quality and that's the reason of the choppiness. I also get it in some high definition films.
