I got a program to do this. http://www.ampsoft.net/utilities/ScreenSaverControl.php

You can set a hotkey that automatically turns your LCD off. When you move the mouse, it comes back on, but if you let it sit, it turns back off. You hafta click the little button in the window to stop it from turning off again. You can also set the delay between hitting the hotkey and the screen actually turning off.

what if you dont press fn+f8 are you able to have to seprate displays. For example, are you able to play games on the laptop screen and browse the Internet on the external monitor.

I just push the little plastic pin at the top of the laptop base (above the volume keys on my D600) and the LCD turns off.
