Dlink "tech" emailed me saying that WPA-PSK may not work with the newer firmware versions...I'm thinking so what...they fix bugs by creating new ones? Oh well...I'm still happy with it for now.

Linksys WRT54G running Sveasoft Talisman 1.1 firmware. Its great, never had a downtime so far, its been on for about 15days so far. Running WPA2-PSK with ssid off

Sorry if I missed, but what was your problem exactly? I, too, have a linksys wifi router (and that's why I'm concerned. Have the famous wrt54g), and don't have any problem. To say the truth, when I first used it, it gave me frequent internet disconnects (PPPoE), and this problem is very common on the internet, if you take a look. However, two sessions on the Linksys live chat solved my problem (MTU setting). I have it running 24/7, and, right now, I believe it's running for what? 2 months without a single disconnect (that I can notice, I don't stay on the net 24/7 ). Using ssid broadcast, WPA2-AES.

Don't need to say that I'm extremely satisfied with it, but understand your problem as well. Care to elaborate, plz?

Linksys WRT54GS is what I have, too! It's really cool. I downloaded the newest firmware, just because he told me to, & it works fine. It's really great!

Just updating, I'm am VERY impressed with the new Dlink. We've been using it at home for a few weeks now and its been flawless. Throughput is better, latencey is improved even when my wife and I are both in our MMO's, no resets, wireless range is great. I'm happy.

I have used DI-624 for the better part of 2 years now (and I got a refurbished one off of EBAY) and it has served me well.

I updated to the dLink di-624s with storage (not MIMO) and it needs a reboot every couple of days. I also haven't got the storage thing working, as my external drive is NTFS and I haven't converted it back to FAT32. dLink's tech support lied to me in a pre-sale e-mail and said it supported NTFS, and it don't.

I recently setup an Actiontec ADSL router with builtin wireless g (got it in local CompUSA). I hate its setup wizards (yeah, you actually have to click through all the Next, Next, Next even if you change just one thing in order for it to pick up the change). But once configured it works quite well.

Also, all the wireless problems I had were due to the Intel 2195 miniPCI in laptop. It would periodically drop connection with whatever router I connect to. As soon as I put Wistron CM-9 (Atheros 5004 based) in, things started working reliably with all routers: I tried both client adapters with Linksys, D-Link, Actiontec, and even Micrsosoft (MN-700, I believe) routers.
Atheros drivers version 4.x.x.x do have issues (memory parity error bluescreen about once a week under a heavy network load) but version 3.x.x.x seem to be very reliable. Intel had problems with both 8.x and 9.x drivers.

The point is, it may be a better idea to get a nice client adapter and have less worry about which router you pick (to some degree, of course).

I recently bought a Linksys WRT54G. If I was buying a new router now, though, I'd just suck it up and pick up a Belkin Pre-N router for about $100. I don't care about the wireless N features, but the improved G and B reception/speeds would be the biggest benefit. Plus, reviews all seem to indicate that it's stable and has all the features that the average/gaming user would need.

Been using the 624 since it came out...rock solid. I use passphrase encryption as well as MAC filtering. No problems at all. Been really happy with it over the other DLink routers I've had.

I have the "famous" (I prefer infamous) WRT54G and owned a D-Link beforehand and I have had problems with both. The D-link just seemed cheap to me, the setup was confusing and forget about support. Now, maybe someone can give me a quick answer (sorry for hijacking the thread for a bit), I have my Linksys secured with WPA personal, but none of my friends can connect to it. When you hit "connect" a window appears (no prompt for the password) saying "windows is attempting to connect to the network" and it never connects.

Therefore, they both

have you tried using different configurations on your router? like no security, only wep, B mode or just G mode (instead of mixed). Isolating factors is the first step to detect a problem. For example, what version of the router you have (ver 2.2, 3, 4, 5 etc.)? What firmware version?

I will be glad to help, specially because I like wrt54g (v. 2.2, which is the one I have) so much and never had a problem of its fault. If anything, reply here or send a PM.

For me, it seems a very simple thing you are not doing right. I, too, had a very simple problem related to MTU some time ago. I just talked w/ Linksys and they told me to set MTU to 1300 because normally this is a setting that won't give me problems with most ISPs (I realized this is not problem, but rather a config setting that I didn't know about).

Do you have DHCP configured on the router? Are your friends using fixed IPs from different subnet range? Could it be that you have MAC filtering turned on in your router and the only authorized MAC is for your wireless adapter?

These are just some of the ideas.

Thanks for the replies! I am not at home so I must think abut this a minute...it is probably a security thing because anyone can connect when the security is off. Another odd thing is that my router is config. with WPA personal, but zi had to set my wireless card to WPA2 to get it to connect. I have version 3.1 I believe and have not updated firmware yet. No MAC filtering, I have DHCP config. I will have to fiddle with it some more when I have friends over. Thanks for the info. Oh, and I tried Linksys chat and they hung up on me! I wasn't rude or anything, seemed like the person just couldn't figure it out

Never heard of WPA2 when was that released?
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/com...uy/cg0505.mspx

First hit on Google search. It was available with the release of WinXP sp2.

One other thing...a number of older wireless cards don't support WPA. My WRT54 is only running WEP because my roommate's 802.11b USB adapter doesn't support WPA Passkey security.

I thought about that, but I was running WPA on my old router and no one had problems then. Any other ideas? I have also been experiencing disconnects lately...for awhile I had none. I have not changed anything so I am not sure why this is happening.

Be careful - the new wrt-54g isn't a linux box like the old wrt-54g. However I believe they will be reissuing the old linux version as a wrt-54gl.
