If you would like to help test out new versions of i9kfangui, please download the External Beta version (available at mckenziedev.com). In addition to posting your findings, have a look at the beta fourms for more information, if you have an issue that's not fixed in a newer release, feel free to post your findings on the i9kfangui beta formums, the forums link will appear after you have registered on the site.

i9kfangui 2.3, Beta 3, build 1, full installer stand alone .006, has been posted to the beta site for those who are testing the application. Note: this build does not install the driver, go into c:\program files\mdi\fanio and run fanio.exe to install it. (or where ever you installed it to + \fanio\fanio.exe)

Version 2.3 beta 1
Changes:
- Minor GUI text updates
- Changed exit mode from temp control to turn fans to high istead of off
- Added MAX Speed option, forces the fans to run at max speed, overrides the bios issues associated with A05 (and A02 for the xps2). Start and stop button are used for this, it will force max speed and keep the fans from slowing down after prolonged usage.

How to test out the new Max Speed option.
Startup i9kfangui
Click on the "Start" button under the "Max Speed" area.
Press FN + Z to revert the control back to the bios, I9kfangui should resume control almost immediately.
Try to put i9kfangui into observer mode while Max Speed is running. (untested)
Put i9kfangui into observer mode and attempt to turn on Max Speed. (untested)
Observe Memory usage for i9kfangui over a 1 hour period, report results.
Observer CPU usage of i9kfangui, it should be very low.

Notes: When "Max Speed" is running, it will disable the options for "Temperature Control" as well as "Direct Fan Control".
After the "Stop" option, "Temperature Control" as well as "Direct Fan Control" will be re-enabled.

How does Max Speed work?
It sets a subset of commands to the fan controls in the bios on an interval basis forcing both fans to high and keeping them there.

Just curious, but is this one a standalone?

OK well the CPU fan speed dropped from about 4500 down to 4239 where it stays within a few rpms. However, Fan 2 the GPU dropped from about 4500 down to 4142 within 1 minute and continues to drop down to about 3812 after 2 to 3 minutes where it stays. It does not speed up or slow down further after this.

I've tested this using both the Fan Control and Direct Control to set the fans on high. I'm running an i9300 with BIOS A03.. I think. Purchased in late May so whatever BIOS they had then as I haven't updated it. Hope this helps.

Updated image showing fans on High using Max Speed:

Update:
OK more testing.. Let me just say.. I LIKE Max Speed!! This seems to push the fans faster then when the BIOS increases them or using i9kfangui's Temp/Direct Control.

Max Speed options Start and Stop work fine. Press Start and it speeds both fans up and removes the ability to select Temperature or Direct Control. Pressing Stop got me for a minute as it does NOT slow the fans down as I'd have thought. Fan speeds stay on high and reenables Temperature and Direct Control.

Using the FN + Z keys while Max Speed is ON lowers the fans for a second but then Max Speed speeds them up again. This is almost immediate. If you turn Max Speed OFF and use the FN + Z keys it does revert back to BIOS control.

Observer Mode does NOT do anything with Max Speed. I set Observer Mode and was able to start and stop Max Speed. I unchecked Observer Mode, turned ON Max Speed and then checked Observer Mode again and was still able to turn Max Speed Off and ON. Max Speed seems to override the Observer Mode function.

Memory usage started at 3,544K and after 2 hours it was using 3,692K. Peak usage was 3,704K. CPU usage was low and almost unnoticed at anytime.

Suggestions:
  1. I would suggest that when turning Max Speed OFF that it places the fans in the SLOW state.
  2. I like how FN + F does not take control from Max Speed, however, it really should kill Max Speed and revert back to the BIOS speeds.
  3. Fix Observer Mode as it has NO affect with Max Speed.

HamTard.. simply download it to the I8kfangui folder. STOP the I8kfangui process and run this one. You do need to have I8kfangui installed.

I am testing atm.

I have always wished for a way to change the scale on the graph. I really do not care about my CPU usage or speed and my temperatures are never under 80f and never over 150f I would like to see the variation in the graph be a bit more obvious.

ill be posting my results for beta 2 shortly, i have a 8600 so ill be playing the "is 5 yrs younger than other school kids, but still wants to play kickball with them" Role

Edit: looks great, Max speed Defnintly works here =D
i would also +1 to max speed off = max speed slow.. but eh
On the 8600 i Do get a +4C on the video card, everything is 34C except that, at 38.. could you add a button in Misc to let us older users subtract 4 - i know its a bit offset thing

do i get beta 2 now?

I'll add it to the list.

When is it going to be fully compatible with the A05 bios? Even with the latest beta, my CPU temp control profile isn't fully in charge. The fans turn on and off constantly.

Right now the only option that is pushing the fan speed on an interval is the max speed option.

Beta 2 or 3 (depending how things go) will add this functionality to the other controls.

Beta 2, build 12 is up for those that have provided feedback on the application.

If you have provided feedback and not yet received the information on where to locate the newer builds, please PM me.

Thanks!!

Spuds, ever since your first build way back when, whenever I use I9kfangui (and even I8kfangui now) My fans get to a certain point and start changing speed like they can't make up their minds which speed to run on. It only works when I've got either program running. If I let the system manage the fans, they stay steady, but they cut on much more than needed.

I want to figure out why my fans are switching speeds the way they do without having to stop using I9kfangui.

2.3 beta 2 build 20 - 11/7/2006
- more max speed and observer mode fixes
- graph bug fixes
- changes to tray icon and other areas to ensure max speed overrides and controls over all settings
- switching from temp control to max speed will save the setting and revert back to temp control after max speed is stopped.
