There are several ways to save power and you have highlighted most of them. There is a Japanese company (I think) that is looking at building a nuclear battery that will last almost forever. The issue is getting the manufacturers to agree on a standard battery.

with 2 batteries, i can easily get 6 hours on full bright. if i go with less bright setting, i can probably stretch it to 7. see sig for my laptop. one thing i do have to say though is the 3+ battery life is with brand new batteries and they only last about a year which, by then, they reach their half life of 2 hours and now it's about 1.5 after 2 years of use.

i have class 4x's a week and use the laptop in class which is 3 hours long each. i *use* to use 1 battery and have left overs and now i need 2 just to get by. just sayin' that there are laptops which performs at first for the 6 or 7 hours but if the battery pukes, you're SOL hence i prefer to carry 2 batteries then rely on 1.
