Agent.exe

Thread Starter
I was curious at what exactly is this process. I searched it on google and got this:

"agent.exe is also a process from Dell that gives the
user an interface to monitor and administer the system"

The reason is every now and then I run into a problem with it. A few days ago I was checking task manager, and there were 300 processes of agent.exe running. That is not the only time it's happened. Other times it has happened, there were around 90-100 of them. I can't kill the process with task manager or a batch file.

Once again it doesn't happen everyday. Virus scans and spyware/adware scans (Norton Anti-Virus, SpyBot, Ad-Aware) have come up with nothing. I was just wondering if anybody has had a problem with this or have any suggestions.

reformat. Dells come with so much garbage on then, there frustratng to use. I like to keep a clean system, and to know ecactly what everything is. Reformatting will also make your laptop faster!

True, reformatting and doing a fresh install of the OS is a good idea; this will make your system run smoother and possibly faster. make sure you have all the drivers before hand. Or load the Lan driver first and download the latest from Dell. Make sure you read the stickies and have a plan before hand, like which drivers to add first. Backup beforehand is a great idea. I'm sure you know all this.

Yeah from reading the forums a while I knew reformatting was probably a good idea. I'm just too lazy now since I have everything installed and I'm four months into having my laptop. But when I have time I will reformat it. Any other ideas are welcome.

Call Dell for the OS CD? Do you mean you can get a clean OS cd (better than the backup CD they send for 10 bucks)?

I've disabled agent.exe from startup with no ill effects. I suggest you do the same.

It's not a backup CD, it's an OEM XP CD.

But am I to understand that I can just call Dell and request one?

If you created the CD using the software which was provided by Dell its an OEM XP CD as odious_m stated which can be used to reinstall cleanly without all the crap. You can also call Dell and state the you need the WinXP CD and Drivers CD shipped out to you. Some people get it without problem while others get some ass who says no or attempts to make them pay for it. If you get someone like this simply call back and get someone else. You can also try going to Dell's website and using their Chat Support. I think more people get better results with the chat.

If you can burn-your-own XP OS CD with the supplied utility on your i9300, then just use that. It is fine.

Otherwise, try this:

I think agent has something to do with Dell service tag and repair. Like everybody said reformat and new install you will be much happier.

I believe the AGENT.EXE file is related to the DELL SUPPORT x.0 software that is loaded on boot up. DISABLE THE SERVICE (through services.msc) and the ICON and that will prevent it from running!

Honestly, in my opinion, a reformat/reinstall is not necessary if you know which services to turn off and which applications to disable or uninstall (if you don't want it). A good site to describe all the Microsoft Windows services that run in your system (and which ones you can SAFELY disable) is at -> www.blackviper.com (i hope it is up again)

When I got my XPS2, after "tweaking" I got a score of 12002 in 3DMark03! <-and that is with STOCK DRIVERS and NO OVERCLOCKING!

This of course was before I got my new G07800 card :P With that card, I get a higher number than that! (still Stock and no overclock)
