Screen manufacture!

1. The Dell Original Configuration page: *Note: this will ony work for North American customers*
(i) Go to Dell support site;
(ii) Select Home and Home Office, and on this new page login to your account (or register by following the links);
(iii) Now select Services and Warrenties located on the right of your 'homepage';
(iv) Now you will now find a series of tabs, click on Original System Configuration, enter your service tag as prompted (if you have already associated the serice tag with your account you can just select it).
(v) Congratulations, you should be able to see your full system specs as shipped, including your screen manufacturer.

3. Registry:
Run the registry editor, if you don't know how (For Windows XP):
(i) Click Start
(ii) Select run
(iii) In the presented field, type "regedit" without the quotation marks and click OK
(iv) Look under the following field using the + extensions on the left:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\DISPLAY
(v) Hopefully you will see one of the following codes:
=> One with HTC will be the Hitachi brand (such as the HTC1C46 WSXGA Display)
=> One with SHP will be the Sharp brand
=> One with SEC will be the Samsung brand (such as the SEC3150 WSXGA Display)
=> I am not sure exactly what Toshiba will be (TSH?) So I will need some feedback here, including any other brands you all find.

Sometimes your manufacturer will not be displayed in the registry, and you will be faced with 4 or 5 "Default Monitor's"... we are not sure why this happens exactly, but if you find this is the case move onto another one of the methods.

4. System Information tools:
System Info tools such as Aida32 and Fresh Diagnose will give you full system specifications, including the screen manufacturer one would hope. But unfortuntely if your registry doesn't list your screen manufacturer, these tools probably won't either because most of them get a lot of their info from the registry anyway.

I tried the above three ways, but couldn't find any info about the manufacture. It all display default.
Any other easy way to find out??

Thanks

I guess I have a Samsung on my M170. The registry search worked for me. FWIW, once I got down to the point you specified, I had "default display" or similar listed, but there was also a folder for SEC####. You may find that you have the same thing if you look again.

I am trying to find out make and model of the WXGA LCD display connected to the X300 in my 9300 but getting nowhere.

Dell service tag has is as this which does not tell me much:
F8997 SUB-ASSEMBLY, LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, VERTICAL ASSEMBLY, 17WX+, SULLIVAN/GILBERT, EUROPEAN MANUFACTURING FACILITY

In the registry I have 4 entries under Default_Monitors, all similarly devoid of anything specific looking. I cannot even find a LPL0000.

I have tried powerstrip but it keeps saying "Valid EDID data could not be found from windows or display driver. DDC not supported"

However, somehow windows knows it is 1440x800 because that is what the slider will go up to. Furthermore, somehow the X300 driver knows it is a flat panel of some kind, as it has it as that the ATI control panel.

Confusing. Any ideas?

Doubie, Sounds like I have exactly the same set-up as you and the same problem in identifying the screen make. I get the same results as you in the registry, in powerstrip,dell service tag etc.Have you managed to find out more?

Have you tried the brightness levels test to determine at least the make? If there's little change (some say little, some say no change) in brightness then you have the LG WXGA+.

It's if there is no change between levels 2 and 3 that you have an LG. Apparently the Samsung has a greater range though thats a bit hard to tell without having one of each next to eachother...

Yes, and it does seem to change at each step. I have also tried to follow the method in the faq (some kind of linux boot CD?) but the download link was broken.

I am also bit concerned of any side effects to the OS being unable to identify the display specification, after all the EDID data is there for a reason.

For example I do have hassle when swapping primary screen between the internal and external monitors. I only seem to be able to do that by fiddling about back and forth with the X300 advanced settings sub menus and annoying pop up warnings, rather than simply using one click in the winxp display properties where the option is greyed out.
