Initial Impressions of the New 15" Powerbook

Thread Starter
Just received my new Powerbook and happy to say that all is well. The new screen is simply fantastic. The resolution is very easy to work with and the brightness appears to be better than the previous generation of 15" powerbooks (I sold my last powerbook this past April). This screen in terms of brightness and color are very comparable to the Acer 8103 that I currently have. I have yet to test the 5.5 hrs of battery time that Apple claims but as long as I can get 3 1/2 hrs per charge I will be happy.

The powerbooks now use DDR2 ram so I didnt have to go and buy another 512 stick to get 1gb. I simply used the 512 crucial stick that I bought for the Acer and it works perfectly with the Apple.

Speedwise, the 1.67ghz is more than enough for what I use it for. OSX does use up a lot of ram so I upgraded to 1gb and that is fine for now. The 80gb, 5400 hdd also fits my needs.

The powerbook still gets a little warm on the botton but the unit is absolutely silent. The only noise that I can hear while writing this review is the soft clicking of the keyboard.

All in all, I am very happy with my purchase. As I stated before, I last had a powerbook in April of this year but I sold it to purchase a Sony s360. Ever since I sold it, I have regretted my decision but now I am back and will only sell this unit to upgrade to the Mactel version sometime next year.

That's one of the things they've been touting; the brighter screens.

I've never had a problem with the brightness of my screen save for when I took my PB to class with me...for some reason it just looked horrible under the lighting there, yet at work with the same type of fluorescent lighting it looked perfect.

The new 15" Powerbook display is not brighter than the 15" Rev D 1.67GHz Powerbook, if you put the two side by side the only thing different is the higher resolution on the new rev E. It's a different story with the 17" Powerbook, the new one does have a brighter display than the last revision as documented on Apples site. Then again the last 17" Powerbooks display was dimmer than the 15".

um, yeah, and most tech review sites get the specs from the companies who manufacture the machine. i.e.-u don't see toshiba sending specs for a dell. what's your point? it's not like they're fudging benchmarks, it's an LCD. in any case, i don't see an actual review on the site so i'm sure when they get a "hands-on" they'll scrutinize it.
