The Extreme Pin Modding Guide - Page 10

Still priming but I guess it's all right... Can't wait to see it 3dmark06 with my 7800GTX oc'ed to 500/1300...

one hour...

Ack!!! Let us know how Prime goes. If stable let me know what pins you shorted as I have a new 2.0Ghz 400Mhz FB sitting right here!
vid4 + 1.244v =1.5v right now.
temp tops at 74c
still priming...
if it's stable i will try lowering voltage!
Holy Crap!!!!!!! Good Job. if you can keep the temps down, that's a great O/C.
I lowered volt to 1.468v and it's been running prime 95 for one hour... Temp tops at 71c now. Not bad IMO
post #188 of 565
Was that a new chip, or one you bought on ebay?
I bought it on ebay

Im a newbe and I have been reading all of the pen modding forums for the past month. Just wanted to let everyone know that I think everything you guys are doing is really cool, so cool I just purchaced a 1.8 745 from Newegg. I know I could have got it cheaper from ebay, but I have had some good dealings with Newegg and I had some extra cash at this moment. Hopefully I will get a good O'cloker. Anyway, just wanted to say hello to everyone, and get ready for some posible questions in the next few days. Keep up the good work guys.

Good luck Lee!!

It is insane how much better games (F.E.A.R. in particular) run with my new CPU! I had the 1.7GHz 533FSB CPU before, now the 2.4GHz pinmodded CPU kicks ass!

The 1.7G CPU is a bottleneck running FEAR! That sounds unbelievable!

FEAR is a graphic intense game especially with a 6800GO. You must be using a fairly low resolution/quality setting.

Hey Guys. I have not done a pin mod yet, but I did decide to try and get used to using Prime 95, I9kfanGUI, and RMClock. Right now I am running Prime95 and it has only been testing for about 15 min and my CPU temp is at 81C. This seems really high for a unmodified laptop. The only upgrade that has been done is 2Gig of RAM. I would not think that that would make a temp increase. Should I stop it? The fans are both on high. This has me concerned. I was wondering if i should just aply AS5 to the current processor befor I try a pen mod 1.8? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

definitely apply as5

81c is too high for stock imo

Fantastic! Seems like you got a very good chip since it can go under 1.5v . Make sure you are using the thinnest layer of AS5 possible on your CPU for the lowest temps. Also make sure that you're at least 10 hours + prime95 stable and gaming stable before adopting a voltage). Note that you may also want to pin-mod to whatever specific voltage you deem stable so that you do not need the software running in order to lower your temps (this is helpful in non-windows environments).

FEAR is actually pretty CPU intensive due to its AI calculations and physics. Especially on a 6800Go, you'll notice framerates to be smoother and your minimum FPS won't be so low, or at least I did.

I'm guessing you're still using the stock Dell thermal pad on the heatsink? If this is the case, you're not making proper thermal contact, and therefore your temps are extremely high. Get some quality thermal grease (arctic silver 5, arctic cermanique, etc.) and apply it to your stock CPU. Or just go ahead and do your pin-mod now and save yourself two applications .

Looking good guys, glad you're keeping this thread alive . I'm a tad busy with school/life atm, but I'll try to update and reply when I can

Thank you Mr. K6! You guys are most helpful!

I think there is no direct pin-mod to get the 1.468v (I can ground 1 to 0 but can't do 0 to 1) so I have to use CHC. But do tell me if I'm wrong!

Just to check before I mess up

I need some help starting.

I've got a GEn 2 with with 2.0 processor. I can't decide which of the two is best to do.

EITHER: Undervold the 2.0 in the GEN2 to reduce temps and overclock.

OR: Replace the 2.0 with a PIN MODDED 1.7ghz Pentium M SL7EP Centrino 735 2m Dothan (from a D800 laptop).

Wouldn't a pin moded 1.7@2.26 (400-533) be better then the undervolted 2.0(533)since it'll run cooler and allow for better overclocking?

Then can I use the 2.0 (533 FBS) processor in the D800? I guess it will run at 400 fbs and be faster then the original 1.7 Dolthan (though a bit hotter but I've already copper modded the 9600 ati in it so it should be fine).

BTW, k6, I've not been able to get your pic (from imageshack.us) to show up in your post. I don't even see a link. Wierd?? That's why I can't benefit from your posts.

Any thoughts?

A pinmodded 1.7 will definitely be faster than your 2.0; you're right about that. It won't necessarily run cooler though, that just depends on how good the CPU you get is. Overclocking is a moot issue, because at this point it is impossible to overclock a processor in a 9300 outside of a pinmod.

The main flaw in that idea is the fact that the D800 is not the 915 chipset, so it does not support 533mhz FSB processors. So the 2.0ghz processor that you have in your 9300 will use a 100 multiplier instead of 133, basically the opposite of a pinmod. So your 2.0ghz CPU will run at 1.5ghz in a 400mhz FSB motherboard. It may or may not be hotter, depending on how much room for undervolting the processor has.

Ahhh, yes, 1.468v would be a problem for pin-modding . I think that you can make pins 1's by isolating them by either breaking them off or using glue. In either case, I dont recommend it as it can be very expensive if you screw up (especially on such a beautiful chip!).

nkhan, if you undervolt your 2.0 you'll have a cooler runnings CPU and a little more battery life. If you pin-mod, your CPU will run hotter as it won't be able to undervolt much if at all. I recommend that you just grab a 1.8 and go for the 1.8->2.4, with a little voltage modification, they seem to have the same sucess rate, if not better, than the 1.7->2.26 mods. If you can't see the pics, you're probably blocking images from non-originating sites, check your internet settings. If you still cant see them, just quote that post and copy and paste the links from the quoted text .
