Sager NP3790 Owners of the First Round

Remember around this time a year ago? The NP3790 was brand new and a bunch of us had ordered quite a number of them from about three different stores, including the best, PCTorque. Then there were was that crazy weather situation over in the far East where our lappies were supposed to be shipped from, causing a pretty bad delay of a few weeks. While we waited, we gathered around here to talk about how we couldn't wait getting our NP3790's, how the delays were being a pain in the ass even though nobody could have done anything to improve the situation, (t'was the weather, after all), and then cases started popping up where certain people had received their NP3790's and were posting pictures of them on here to rub it in the faces of all the other poor waiting souls... I was part of the latter group.

Anyway, almost a year has passed and I thought here's a good idea for a thread: for those who've had their NP3790's for close to a year now, are you still happy with it? Has anything changed? Are you still satisfied with the hardware? Did anything break? Did you have to send it in for repair? Have your initial opinions of certain things changed?

I'll start.

I'm still very happy with my NP3790. That doesn't mean everything is perfect, however. I definitely have some criticism to get rid off, but the system is running as nicely as ever, after countless reformats and Windows reinstalls and now as a dual-boot system with WinXP and Ubuntu Linux installed. If my NP3790 is anything, it' reliable. Granted, I've had some bluescreens due to memory read errors or something of the sort, but it never caused any major trouble and I haven't seen one of those in months.
One major drawback of this laptop are its speakers. I noticed that when I first got it, and my opinion in that regard has gotten even harsher. The speakers of the NP3790 simply suck. It's about as good as my cheap alarm clock with integrated radio, and that's when the reception of the radio signal is rather poor...
Compared to most Dells and the brand new Powerbook G4 my apartment mate got last week, it's downright embarrassing how bad the speakers are. Especially with the pricetag... having that said, it's a problem I don't mind much because I use a great headset: the Sennheiser PC165. The speakers are so bad I actually deny their existence.

Next up: the display. If you got the WUXGA display, the one with 1920x1200 resolution, you were likely one of the people who couldn't stop staring at it, and much less raving about it here on the forums about a year ago. It's quite stunning to be able to fit so much in a 15" display. I still love it, but one thing I had to realize over time: it's not very bright. I noticed this over time when I saw my laptop compared directly to others around me, like when I'm at lecture and see all the Dells shining bright all around me. The whites on a Dell screen compared to the whites on an NP3790 are worlds apart. In direct comparison, the NP's white is almost light greyish compared to Dell's powerful, bright screens. If there is one thing I would change about my NP, I'd get a WUXGA screen with twice the brightness

The front three-button group. At first I thought it was a great idea, and useful, but after a while it got rather annoying. I stopped counting the times when all of a sudden I'd lose my connection and wonder why, I'd find that somehow I had pressed the wireless button in the front. The other two buttons I never use, maybe I should find a use for them .

One thing I can't say I'm very happy about is Sager post-sale support. I'm not saying they don't answer calls, make you wait too long, or are a pain to deal with, (I never even had to call them about anything), but something I would have expect is to be able to go to their site, find my NP, and then be able to download the latest drivers and software that came with the laptop. There is no such thing at Sager as far as I've seen, and me and other NP3790 owners found that the best way to keep up with such updates is to subscribe to this thread. Doesn't that seem a bit poor, if users have to resort to having to find their updates on their own? I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm advanced user and I can find all the software and drivers I need on my own without problems, but it's about the principle. I've come across this instance too many times: "Please get drivers from your laptop manufacturer". Well.. as far as I know, the drivers listed for the NP3790 on Sager's site have not been updated since the release of the NP3790. Am I missing something? Is my criticism displaced? I realy don't mean to sound like a dick, and if I'm missing something here, I beg you to enlighten me.

That's all I can think of right now. Should be enough too Here's the thread I posted when I had just received my new NP3790 if you're curious

EDIT:
Dammit.. I just realized I posted this in the tech support forum. Mods, please move if necessary, and sorry.

i want a x700 and a sonoma processor

as for the rest... my motherboard went crazy once and i had to send the laptop for rma... and i also consider the front buttons annoying!

but my lappy rocks!

I've had my 3790 for a bit over a year now... and i'm still loving it... but at the same time, i still, of course, drool over the new sager releases...
I have to agree, the speakers are worthless... but I got hold of the sound blaster audigy 2 ZS notebook PCMIA card , and with a decent speaker system... I can't complain too much.

The only main problems I have faced soo far are that the WUXGA cannot reduce its resolution to 1680 x 1050... which have caused my eyes some trouble over recent times... and also, i have a screen flickering problem that is reoccurring and becoming quite troublesome during gaming and movie watching. Also, my left hand wrist heats up real fast when playing games, i'm guessing it is the result of the GPU heat up, which lead me to my last concern. NO GPU upgrade! ...

Otherwise, I have not had one blue screen or unexpected crash... which is nothing less than a blessing...

I opted for the wxga screen just for the glossy surface and I must say it's really bright, so I have to turn down the brightness by 2-3 levels. I think the reason why you think that your's isn't that bright anymore compared to the new dells is because the new dells have all glossy surface screens on them. So far, the only problem I have w/ this computer is the atrocious speakers. The only hardware problem I've had w/ this laptop was a bunk hdd that died along w/ all my data within 3 weeks of usage. After getting a new hdd the 3790 has lasted a little over a year w/out any problems. I still use my machine to model and render 3d animations. I'm surprised that it plays all of the recent games pretty well. I am very happy w/ my machine and don't have any plans of letting it go anytime soon.

I've had my 3790 for just over a year. I've really enjoyed it (other than the really crappy sound) until about a few weeks ago it has been blue screening and locking up about every 10-20mins. It has gotten so bad I can't even use it any more. And of course this all starts happening right after my 1 year warranty is up. I bought some AS5 and put that on the CPU last night and it didn't seem to help much.

Anyone have any ideas? How do you get to the GPU? I tried to take the whole bottom of the case off but it didn't want to come off? This is really frustrating. But I was able to unplug those stupid buttons on the front so I don't bump them any more. I'm not so sure about sagers anymore. I bought the 3790 becuase of all the others having heat problems, but it seems my 3790 is finally dieing because of heat issues.

After a little over a year, mine is still kicking ass. I've never had a blue screen, everything still runs as smoothly as it did the day I got it, and i have no trouble playing battlefield 2 as often as possible. Okay - there is one thing that isn't running quite as smoothly as the day I got it - my fan got instantly and noticeably louder one day out of the blue. It kicked on as usual, then the volume just jumped up, as if there was something stuck in the fan. I've taken it apart and checked it out, but I can't find anything that might be causing it. It still works fine and I'm not having any heat issues, but the slight increase in volume is a tiny bit irksome.

I do remember those days about a year ago when every thread on the forums was 3790-related - we were all like new parents. All in all - I'm still very happy with mine.

By the way - while I have access to some other 3790 owners - I'm finally going to do something about the cruddy sound this thing has. I bought an Audigy 2 pcmcia card the other day, and should receive it in a couple more. Although it won't affect the onboard performance, i'll just be happy to have good sound coming out of headphones and external speakers for a change. I've since heard a few people somewhere on the forums talk smack about creative - i'm hoping i didn't blow it by dropping $90 on this card. Has anyone else here used one? If so - how's the performance?

Thanks in advance!

I have the Audigy 2 and it works great, dont forget to turn the system volume way down when you plug it in! I was actually kind of torn between the external USB sound "thingy" (amplifier? Sound card?) or the audigy 2, finally opted for the Audigy 2 even though it was twice as expensive simply because it is not yet another thing to plug into the USB ports.

I sold my Audigy2 PCMCIA card because I really didn't like it. It heats up the left side of my notebook a lot and plus I've been getting all types of staticy noises when I was playing CS:S with it. I currently use the Headroom Total Bithead (http://www.headphone.com/products/he...al-bithead.php) as my soundcard. Sounds really good with my headphones. It's sooooo perfect!

3790

I have had my 3790 for about one year now. My solution for the poor sound is a pair of 5.1 LTB surround sound USB headphones. There is a fan making a lot of noise but i have learned to live with it . In All i feel its a Great laptop for the price. I just recently started having problems with some newer games playing or even starting at all . Sager should update it driver downloads . To sum this all up I Still love my 3790 .

As I said in this thread, I think that this computer was one of the worst decisions I've ever made.

I was happy for a little while, but now I'm planning on replacing it as soon as I can.

Ouch.. sorry to hear . That's really a terrible experience. I've had some problems here and there, but aside from the slight discolored spots on the screen, no bad permanent and hardware-related thing has happened to my Sager. It's been rock-solid and reliable in that regard. I am having wireless problems now, but it's my router, not the Sager.. and I'm about to restore an earlier backup right now because I took Windows tweaking and registry fixing a bit too far it seems.

I really miss gaming however, and the card in the NP3790 is really very dusty by today's standards

How much do you think a fully jacked up Sager would sell for?
Here's my take on it: I still love my 3790, after nearly a year and a half. It's the most versatile machine I've ever owned. Plus I got mine for a steal, buying it from rjtech.

As far as problems go, I've had no major issues. I also hate the speakers on it, but I think the sound card on it is more than half the problem. I eventually started using a TurtleBeach USB sound card, and was completely happy.

I got the WSXGA+ screen, and absolutely love it. It's brightness has declined a bit over time, and it will occasionally flicker at the highest level, but it's still a very very beautiful display. I dislike having to use anything else.

I've actually grown to love the keyboard and the touchpad on the machine, especially with circular scrolling enabled on Linux.

My only lasting complaints are: the thickness of the plastic on top of the LCD was inadequate (I'm always afraid I'll break it), the webcam leaves a lot to be desired, the wireless signal drops unless I explicitly provide the AP MAC address, and as I sit here writing this, the hard drive is on its very last legs.

I've loved this machine, but I think anyone looking for a machine where they get good support should be looking elsewhere.

The thing that still amazes me is that, for a very long while, the 3790 was still the best combination between speed, gaming ability, power, and battery life available. Even looking for a laptop today, for the price I paid when I bought this a year ago, there are many current laptops that can't beat out the 3790!

Bow to the 3790!

That's what struck me about the NP3790.. the components in it are amazing, even by today's standards.

Even by today's standards, my NP3790 is a pimped out machine. Many laptops can't beat my baby's performance even TODAY. That's very impressive...

The only area where the NP3790 is very much lacking is graphics . Our mobile ATI cards are very poor performers compared to the stuff that's out and available today.

got mine in october last year, and it still rocks.

NO ONE problem...everything work fine and I am even think to upgrade with a dvd burner, and in the futur with 2 gig memory and a 100 gig HDD, as I will have to go to the USA, maybe i will purchese an HDD there.

my father who got an acer with a slow processor last year , is now half broken.
he paid half price for his acer , but at the end, he has to buy another one at 1000 bucks ....which will break in 1 year when mine will be 2 years old, and still running like a charm...
ah ah ah ah ah!!!!.

in europe now they sell the 1.6 and 1.7 ghz. I have seen, most laptops are dvd writer, and 60-80 gig usually and for a 100gig, 2 gig laptop cost here over 2000 euro....
so yes, the 3790 still rock!

I gotta agree with you 100%

I've had mine for almost one year and It's been very reliable. I've chucked it my backpack and taken my Sager to all sorts of different places many, many times and put it through plenty of wear and tear and yet it's still performs as well as when I first recieved it. I am still not and never was 100% happy with the heat of the 3790 (I'm sure all you 3790 owners know what I mean, it's most pronounced where you rest your left hand), but you can get away with it and it's a minimal issue.

But like you said, my biggest gripe is that it is held back largely in the GPU department. If Sager had just given some more graphical grunt, like a Mobility 9800, X700 or even a X800, this system would just be awesome on all fronts!

I have had a Sager 3790 for just over a year. Overall, I love it! The video is beautiful, the case sturdy and hardware reliable.... Except 1)the Toshiba Dual Layer CD/DVDW SD-R6472 It started out only occasionally locking up and freezing up the OS and has become almost unusable now. The media type or software does not seem to matter, it is erratic and almost always ends in a reboot. I have upgraded to the TU51 firmware but it had no effect. And 2) {Everyone in unison} The Sound Sucks. And 3) Yes the belly-buttons are annoying, but bearable and don't deduct from the reliablity and beauty of it. I have had no other problems with the notebook at all. I am considering replacing the drive with a Pioneer Dual Layer Slim DVD Writer/Burner DVR-K05, 8X DVD+/-RW, Slot Design (I have the double 12-cell battery and the tray is a drag). As it is out of warranty, I am looking for Disassembly instructions and/or any input regarding the DVD problem. Otherwise, I cannot say enough good things about it. I understand that Clevo/Sager manuals for the M37EW have detailed disassembly instructions, however Sager's site is MIA right now, and the zip files at Clevo's are corrupted. If anyone has the PDF's, I would certainly appreciate copies.

One odd thing that started happening just recently is this...

My NP3790 randomly turns OFF. Without warning, completely randomly, my Sager has started to turn off by itself. And I don't mean a Windows shutdown.. I mean, ZAP and out. Like turning off a TV.. it's as if there's a little green man inside who keeps unplugging a crucial power cable. I'll beat that guy blue if I ever catch him!

Has this been reported before? I thought it only happens when running the laptop on battery power, but just now it happened while on A/C! I'm getting really worried right now

Other than that it's running as stably as ever.

maybe it is stupid what I say, but keeping your laptop always on is better than to shut it down each time you do not use it.my screen goes black after 5 minutes, but it stays on.not even on stand by!
during the night i run antivirus, antispies,...etc

Moerl, do you turn off ur laptop frequently?
