Hot dog! That is normal for some devices that needs to have pre-loaded driver being recognized. Just like XP would need SATA driver before recognizing a SATA drive, in this case your optical drive

Don't loose those disks

This model has another newer BIOS version, let me see if I can dig it up somewhere. Or if any members that have it can upload it here for you.

Just a shot in the dark but you may remember the new disk was originally Apple formatted?
Anyway, this is the first time I've been able to do anything with it, in terms of formatting.
However, after my first attempt to install it was when the problems started.
I admittedly managed to make a mess of the BIOS when trying to force boot from the CD which then led me to having to take to whole thing apart to reset the BIOS.
Then, however, I reinstalled the old drive and that booted fine but still no working boot from CD.
I'm really a bit confused here.
And I do ultimately want access to CD booting as a result of how I like to have my partitions - pretty much the reason for the new drive.......

Nope - but it could be the cause.

Back to my earlier breeze My suspicion of the new drive blasting your optical firmware So let's go hunting for a firmware for your drive to re-flash it.

I just managed to find and update to 2.08
If there's anything further then that would be great but I didn't think there was?

Nope. You have the latest BIOS version. Would you mind attach that version here for us all to share in the future?

No unfortunately.......
The xp setup formatted the disk to NTFS but then was unable to install for some reason and still no cd boot ability.
I'm just trying thr floppies again......
Oh great - got the error again:

The following value in the .SIF file used by setup is corrupted or missing:
Value 0 on the line in section [SourceDiskFiles] with key "SP2.cab."
Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3.

Noe that's happened twice and I'm sure the XP Pro CD is ok?????

Sorry to ask again but, any ideas?

Try to find another installation disk, and try it with another hard drive (really).

Well, turns out that last error was because the startup floppies were for an earlier version of xp, whereas my disc is with sp2 incoporated, so all I had to do was get new floppy versions for SP2 from Ms and the install was on!

I now have 4 working (3 pevious cloned back and 1 fresh) partitions!
At last!

I also learned a lot and many thanks for your help!

I still have the non cd bootable problem which I thought I might make a fresh post about elsewhere as that is really strange. Any objections?

Also can I get feedback on the double size batteries for this model?
I need to get a new battery if I want to take it mobile and thought this may be the way to go?

Other than that (in the short time) I want to get a wifi card as well (originally I didn't want one) - any models/suggestions?

Ultimately I'll probably upgrade the processor too but the only ones I've tracked down so far (the 2.1 that is) are from China and come in at around between £90 and £100 which is quite a lot considering the limited performance increase.

Anyway many thanks again for all your help and please give me your feedback!

Cheers,
Northwinds.

Glad to hear things are working out - well, sort of

Sure, post away, a clean new thread on the issue with reference back here for members to understand the history would be great.

Also open another thread for the battery if you wish.

cheers ...
