Thanks for that - much more optimistic than half an hour ago!

Any pointers on how to reflash from windows?
All you need is the appropriate BIOS file from Sager in a form of EXE. Just be sure that the power cord is plugged in at all time during the update/flash

Hi
Thanks again.
Unfortunately all the links on this site are dead and eurocom and sager don't offer the BIOS....

:-(

2.07 BIOS.

You would need to boot from a diskette for flashing. Unzip the file and put it on a bootable floppy disk. Again, use the power supply and not on battery.

Furthermore, do this at your own risk, I am not responsible for the content or whatsoever

You are not the only that has this dilemma Just get (borrow) an external USB floppy drive and it'll do. It is a good investment, one never knows when it is being needed for notebooks. It is sure way to access any systems when issues arise, all BIOS are still made to look at the floppy drive device at start, present or not

But surely with there being no USB option in the existing BIOS this would not work?
I found this process online :
http://www.broadbandgenie.co.uk/blog...a-floppy-drive
and tried it with a USB key, but unfortunately it still won't recognise it.
Do you think a USB floppy drive would be any different?
The only one I can pick up locally is another £25
Otherwise I have to order online for £10 and wait a week.
If I was confident it would work then I might, but.......??????

Yeah, i hear and read a lot about using USB stick as bootable device - never worked for me. Only time it works is when I used it to carry a portable Linux, but not as a floppy drive replacement

USB external floppy drive works all the time.

Got a USB floppy and seems to work - just a little confused on how to do it?

The Bios update files I have are a .bin file and a flash.exe and a fp.exe

I was presuming that all I had to do was use one floppy to boot into dos then run the falsh.exe, however I'm having problems with that - any suggestions?
Cheers!

fp.exe xxxx.bin

That should work.

Thanks for that!
BIOS all good now :-)
However still unable to read from a boot cd - I've tried several including my official XP Pro and a copy of Hiren's Boot CD.

Any ideas why this should be?

My original intention was to install another partition with XP on the larger drive.....

I would try with another optical drive, just for kick. I know, you have used your girl friend drive before. Hate to think that it is a board's issue.

But that's the thing - in windows the optical works fine - just not in boot up.

Intéressant ...

And you had this issue all this time? Or just recently

cheers ...
Just recently since I initially swapped in the new HDD.
You can check and see if the jumpers are being cross-wired, meaning that it could be that the new HDD has made the optical drive to be other than it used to be (master/slave or whatever). I am just shooting breezes at you at the moment

Do you mean as in physical jumpers?
I don't think there are any on the hdd.
No I did not think so either, being a notebook hard drive. Let me chew on this a little bit more.

The CD boot option is being recognized in BIOS and on the 1st boot position? You saved the configuration?

CMOS battery is the next thing to look at for replacement candidate ..

cheers ...

Here's a very strange thing!
While looking for a floppy to reinstall the BIOS I came across six XP install floppies which all loaded up fine and then asked for the XP Pro CD,which I inserted and it reads!!!!!??????!!!!

Why on earth should that be???!!!???
