Another person needing advice on PC vs. Mac - Page 2

you mentioned 2 of my friends, you're right, both own G4 ibooks
i repeat, what generation? that's about as clear as saying they have Pentium Ms w/o specifying speed. to leave that out means the uninformed might generalize issues to all iBook G4s, and not say an 800mhz revision, which i believe may have been one of your friends' machines. that's how many revisions from the current one?

The Package - although solid through out (read: no flex) the whites are different shades of white, wtf?
it isn't. mine and every other one i've seen are matched perfectly. only way it would be mismatched is if he or someone else (a tech) replaced the lid or lower case from possibly an older model. buy one and check it out, it'll match.

The Software: Your typical mac package of OS X + iLife + MS Office. take it or leave it.
um, yeah...every professional review i've ever read about a Mac since OS X and the iLife suite came out, PC and Mac sites/magazines alike, rave about them (OS X and iLife). and your response is take it or leave it...par for the course champ, keep up the abf status quo. needless to say most ppl who are curious about Macs may not know about Office being a Mac product as well. most modern Mac reviews (by PC oriented ppl) note that unless u r in need of very specific software the "switch" isn't that painful at all. funny how the mention of software actually bridging the platform divide and which regularly plays a part in ppl's decision-making gets such a passe review on your part.

Verdict: I wouldn't wanna own one.
yay! another negative verdict from abf regarding an apple product. who would have thought...? what are the odds?

imo u started out well early on in the thread and have gone downhill along the way. if u want to do a legit review of an iBook or any notebook for that matter, much less give advice about what to buy. buy it and use it. until then, i'm quite sure enough forum members have made it clear how they feel about your "reviews".

i could say that since i repair PCs, that all i see are broken systems and how they fail. i don't bc i'm aware that by in large most of them are fine. it would be an illogical step to say that all PCs are "bad" simply bc i have access to the ones which go awry.

ok, let me clear a few things up.

revisions of my friends' ibooks. Yes, one of them is 800mhz, i am not sure about the 2nd one, might also be the 800mhz model.

its quite possible the screen was replaced on my teacher's lappy, after all, its a school laptop, stuff happens.

my "take it or leave it" remark was meant to be open ended. I meant it in a way as you either like it or you don't, its up to you. I did not say "OS X is Crap!" beause its not, i was trying to imply its up to each user to determine if they like or not for themselves.

and i think my "i wouldn't wanna own" one verdict is well justified for the fact that the keyboard is loud, the touchpad is lousy, and the screen is sub-par. However, that doesn't mean that somebody else might think the same. For instance if you use a usb mouse all the time the touchpad is useless anyway, and so forth.

Why do you need an anti-virus on the Mac? There is NO reason for it. I've ran this one for nearly a year without ANY sort of virus protection and it's still running as fine and smooth as it did when I bought it. The only reason anyone would consider an anti-virus on a Mac is just incase you send files with a PC and want to make sure the stuff you send them can't damage THEIR system. But otherwise, no reason at all, and that's all because of OSX (and the instability of Windows, as a by-product).

abf:

The latest revision of iBooks have scrolling trackpads. Also, at least with my Powerbook, the accuracy and responsiveness of my trackpad is quite nice. I actually prefer using it with design work rather than my optical mouse.

thank u for clarifying. the KB is subjective i guess. i like mine fine and yet my friend's is more "clacky" which i tend to like. kind of like how people like mechanical KBs in the desktop realm, i like a crisp audible response from a KB which my friend's 14" has over my 12", prolly from diff KB manufacturers.

o haven't tried teh free opensource scroll drivers available on the net for the iBooks and older PBs, but the responsiveness of the trackpad and scrolling is just peachy. there are OS X differences that frustrate me from time to time however, like wanting to click on one file after a bunch have been slected from the finder and not being able to select it w/o clicking outside the group selection area. other than that mechanical responsiveness is fine.

agreed. and it's virtually impossoble that anyone w/ internet access on their PC wouldn't have AV software that would catch it.

Well, after a bit of debate, I went by the local Apple store and, since they would match the educator pricing, I went ahead and got one.

12" PB G4 1.5
1.25 G of RAM
Super DVD drive
80 G HD
3 year Apple Care
Student/Teacher Ed. MS Office for Mac

Total-$1950, before tax. Nice discounts for education.

Haven't even opened the box yet, but I am about to. Will let you all know what I think. I do appreciate the advice, both for and against Apple. I promise a detailed review to help out with these Mac vs. PC questions that keep popping up.
