its well worth the extra money to get an asus z71v with the 256mb card and the wsxga+ lcd. its only about 200 or so dollars extra.

Toshiba is no more evil than Dell. Three of their laptops and no issues.... My next machine won't be a Toshiba, I decided to spend a lot more and get whatever the best graphic card is out... but they make a decent machine for the price and their inhouse extended warranties are very cheap.

Looking to see my Alieware.

Plays Americas Army real good:

Alienware Area 51m 15.4" / INTEL PENTIUM 4-C 2.8 GHZ 800MHZ FRONT-SIDE BUS / 60GB 7200RPM HD / 1Gig of DDR PC2700 SO-DIMM / AREA-51M NVIDIA 5600FXGO WITH 128MB MODULE / CD RW - DVD player

Purchased the laptop 09/04/2003 for $3,074.50 (includes tax)

Unit is very clean and the LCD only cleaned with LCD wipes.

It is in great shape. There is 1 half-dead pixel on left side of screen but hardly noticeable. Sometimes it goes in and out.

Does not have internal wireless network card but I will include an external PCMCIA Linksys a/b/g card which I never had a problem with.

Also included:

Alienware mousepad
Laptop backpack
Original CDs

Would you be interested.

You can get a used gaming machine for pretty close to $600.

Check out the eMachines M6805 (or 68xx series). The 6805 in particular may need a BIOS update, but for the price and the age they're quite powerful machines.

What Anthean means about the Pentium M is that the clock-speed (the GHz number) isn't the only measure of how fast a processor is, just like the size of a car engine (in liters) isn't the only measure of how fast the car goes.

For instance, the eMachines computers I mentioned are powered by Athlon 64 processors made by AMD. The M6811's processor runs at 2.2GHz, but it is the equivalent of a Pentium 4 running at roughly 3.6 GHz, simply because it's more efficient.

For a laptop, you don't want a Pentium 4, by the way. The Pentium 4 is a highly inefficient design, so it uses a great deal of electricity (meaning your battery won't last long) and produces a great deal of heat. This means that your computer itself has to be bigger, to accomodate all the fans you need to get rid of all that heat.

Go with a Pentium M or an Athlon 64 instead.

If you want to get an excellent all around laptop now for under $600, I would recommend this Gateway M505X laptop currently being offered on eBay. I use my M505X daily and can testify to its quality and versatility. More information on the M505 can be found here.

I get what you are saying, but now how can I find the equivalent. What factors should I add in? My neighbor has a 650 MHz and it works with about the same speed as I'd say a 2.2 GHz

How much would that Best Buy Gateway computer be about?

This laptop will not be useful for playing computer games. Like nearly all other bottom end laptops now on the market, it offers the worst possible integrated graphics performance. The M505X I recommended to you would be far better at playing computer games than this model. The M505X is also sturdier, higher quality, better sounding and would offer better battery life.

Okay, New Search

Fast computers... the Processor doesn't have to be 3.5 Ghz.. as long as it's equivalent is pretty fast... I don't care about Memory or Hard Drive... GO!

Tell me what you think of this next comp.

Can anybody tell me what factors add in to how fast a computer goes?

Just a gentle warning (from someone who used to live in Allston-Brighton): don't be fooled by how fast a computer loads web pages. As the bottleneck is generally the internet connection (even for people who have DSL or cable internet), almost all computers will appear equally fast.

Like most people here have said you will not get far at all with integrated graphics and a decant amount of 3d gameing realy.

At the budget you have you have to ask yourself do you need a laptop/notebook.. or could you make do with a built yourself desktop solution which will definatly at the low end of the price spectum give you far more for the money.

Toshiba's great to me, this computer is perfect.

But I don't know if I'd trust too many companies with 'budget' laptops after what I went through with Dell. If you want a re-telling of that evil tale I can go and do that but basically, two laptops later I got a refund and bought this FLAWLESS Satellite...

This is what I possibly might get.. I'm a high school student so I don't really have a lot of cash so I'm going the budget route too..
I'm going use APP (academic purchasing program) to get this
1.6 ghz pentium m
256 mb (getting another 256 from newegg.com)
40 gig
Windows Xp home
X700 128mb
for total of $990.84 plus tax and shipping
So it is actually possible to get a notebook with x700 under $1,000 also there is a $50 mail in rebate so after that the price is 940.84

That sounds like a good deal. Is it a Compaq V4000T?
