Complete Notebook Rookie Needs Advice on MX7515

This morning my desktop froze up with a corruption somewhere within Windows. It is about 4 years old and has ripped through 2 motherboards, a new graphics card, a crashed hard drive, and countless other annoyances. Basically about every 6 months something very expensive to fix on it has broken, costing me a fortune. Well I have had it. It's time for a new computer.

So on a whim I stopped by Best Buy today and suddenly the notebooks caught my eye. I have always had desktops, but now that I am married I have my wife's desktop to use if need be, so getting a notebook seemed like a logical choice.

The employee who I was speaking with at bb seemed pretty knowledgeable, and immediately steered me towards the Gateway MX7515, which is on sale for $1199. It looks like a nice notebook, but being something of a notebook novice I thought I would ask for some advice here.

I have always been jealous of notebook owners taking their computers with them on trips and such, so I would really like to replace my desktop with a notebook, but don't want to lose too much power. I do like to play games, but I rarely get the chance to as I am usually very busy. I need a computer that can handle media, powerpoint, and things like that. I also would like something that I don't need to worry too much about it becoming obsolete in 2 years. I have several friends who bought notebooks with 20-40 gb of storage who now pretty much have very expensive paperweights because their computers are so slow and bogged down.

So, what is the general opinion of the MX7515? Was the bb employee correct in telling me that it was the best bang for your buck notebook? Is there another one I should consider instead?

I am seriously debating running back out tonight or tomorrow night and buying the thing if it really is as good of a deal as the salesperson said.

As I said, I am a total rookie when it comes to notebooks, so any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Price is definetely a factor, as I don't have much to spend. I think the monthly total at BB was somewhere in the range of $35, and I wouldn't want to go much higher than that. I am a teacher, we don't make much

definately. you're not gonna find any notebook out there with a better bang for the buck than the 7515, especially at with that sale price

Thanks Anaconda, I appreciate the response. Anyone else have any opinions on this computer? Any problems with it?

Agreed. Is it "the baddest machine on the face of the planet"? Certainly not. But it is definately one of the baddest machines in that price range. If I was to buy a new one today, it would be the 7515. For now, I'm stuck with it's younger sibling, an m6809.

Well, I am typing this on my brand new mx7515. Setting up the wireless connection was a bitch, but it looks like I am good to go now. Thanks for the advice!

If you look at in terms of "price to performance ratio", to steal a term from Intel, the 751x series of notebooks beat anything else in its price range. When the price drops to $1199, it's almost a must-buy because of what you get in return. I have the 7405GX, and I've never been happier with a computer, let alone a notebook.
