Strange little problem w/ Start Menu stalling

For me it is the little problems that drive me the most nuts. I mean I could probably have my monitor half melted and just deal with it but if it is a little jumpy I go nuts. So what happens is that if I go over to my start menu, then start scrolling up sometimes everything will freeze for a couple seconds. The only thing I can do is move my mouse but I can't click on anything, then once it comes back everything I clicked on is instantly done.

Now this really drives me nuts because I do everything out of habit. So if I am used to going over to Start -> Programs -> ArcGIS -> ArcMAP the computer may stop once I get to Programs but I will still move and click the mouse because I do it without looking. Now this can cause some problems with me clicking random things other places and really annoys me.

So where do you guys think I should start messing around? I know I didn't give too much info about the problem but I really don't know what else to say about it. My usual solution is reformat/reinstall but I just did that a week ago so I really don't think that is necessary

Another problem I have noticed is that if it goes into suspend mode the wireless card won't function correctly when it comes back. I have to turn off wireless than turn it back on for it to work again. Doesn't bother me too much but does anyone else have this problem?

Specs:
i9300
MCE
2GB Kingston RAM
60GB 7.2k rpm HD
6800 Go (NU)
1.86Ghz

do you have all the XP 'eye candy' on or have you set the menu's to run under classic mode? To reduce the start menu to plain stuff i.e. that loads faster (if you havent already!) then go right click my computer --> properties --> Advanced tab --> performance section 'settings' --> and select the adjust for best performance. Or you could just alter the specific ones that you think are making it slower.

Hope thats helped.

This will speed it up fast, I change this reg entry first thing on all my machines.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Desktop \ MenuShowDelay

By default, the value is 400. Change this to a smaller value, such as 0, to speed it up.

Thanks for the suggestions. Test runs will commence tonight.

None of those things help

And it isn't a normal delay that is bothering me. When I go up the start menu to documents the computer freezes while it tries to load what is supposed to populate the documents menu. It only happens if I mouse over documents then move my mouse off of it before it loads.

Sounds like perhaps a bad hd or a bunk OS install...

I will reinstall and see how that fixes it. I don't think the HD is bad because I just got it a week and a half ago, and just installed then too.

This is most likely a HD glitch. With my old laptop, which had a *clicking* HD, it would do this most of the times for the duration of the clicking noise. So i assume the time it takes to for your system to *unfreeze* is the time for the disk head to unpark and position itself where it is needed. So i would fear there is no real solution to this problem

The odd thing is that it is smooth as silk unless I go over the documents menu.

I overclocked the video card the other day and I set that back to normal... I am going to see if that helps for a few days.
