Any Area-51 m7700 owners who haven't had any problems??? - Page 2

I have had no issues what so ever with mine...but I would recommend a 3yr warranty, it is well worth the extra $ to protect your investment and give you some extra piece of mind...you will love your 7700

I've had mine for about 7 months now and have had no major problems. Intialialy the computer could not 'see' the second hard drive, called Support, fixed within 20 minutes.

I tote my computer to work everyday and game on it most nights.

I do have several recommendations though to anyone looking to buy this model:
1. Get the large packpack
2. Get two power bricks.
3. Get more than 1 GB RAM. (Hard to run Win2003 VM and XP w/ 1GB)
4. Don't let your company install start-up scripts on it.

I've had mine for roughly a year now and I'd have to say that for the 7700, although it does live up to some of the performance factors, was really disappointing in a few important ways: a.) mine ended up with a completely dead on-board audio...spent about 4 months going around with really distorted sound until I went out and bought a Creative Audigy ZS PCI card b.) computer as usual, runs hot, roughly between 60 (on a cool day) to 80 degree celcius...CELCIUS...c.) the 100 point guarantee seems like a joke considering that the computer was so freshly formatted; no additional performance tweaking and the secondary hdd was not formatted...in many ways, I really feel the computer on arrival is in no way ready for instant use.
There's a lot of setup work that needs to be done before I felt satisfied that it can be called a gaming computer. Not a major bone of contentions, but somewhat disappointing. and finally d.) upgrading is costly; when upgrading up gets close to the same amount of buying a new 7700, it's pretty disheartening.
The good things about Alienware though, is that you do get a free t-shirt and tech support tends to go the extra step; one of the AW techs (Will) called me up the next day at 5:30AM PST to try and help resolve my sound problem when they couldn't help me the day before (unfortunately it didn't really resolve the problem, but the dedication is very much appreciated).
In the end, I kinda regret purchasing a 7700, since I could have used the money to build my own computer (as I have done recently) and feel more at ease.

I purchased my 7700 back in May and the motherboard died on me in August. I sent it back and it was replaced and sent back to me in 3 weeks. There service was good. Im just concerned that the Alienware gets so hot it effects the motherboard. And foolishly I didnt get a 3 year warrenty. Wish I did now cause I am nervous the 7700 will crap out again.

call em up.. if its still within the first warranty i believe they will actually let you upgrade your warranty...

they do in australia apparently... not sure bout US but worth a try..?

I just did and they told me they now offer it. So I upgraded to the three year. Even if nothing happens to the 7700 again..which I hope doesnt. Its good piece of mind knowing I wont have a $3500 paper weight after a year.

Have had mine since May 05, and I have had no issues whatsoever with it. Yeah it's hot, yeah it's heavy, but I knew that when I purchased it. :-)

other then that, i LOVE my a51m7700, i had a problem with my FN keys.. but a simple 20 minute call to support fixed that problem with ease. i would suggest buying that machine as soon as possible.

ive owned my machine for almost 2 months and i pack it up 2-3 times a day and move it. i have friends with wireless, school with wireless and a local coffee shop with wireless.... i take it everywhere and its never stationary, i love it without a doubt. i would highly recommend alienware to anyone who is even thinking about it. generally the people who bitch dont know much about how costom pc's effect your general expectancies of a new pc.

when you order it post a review!

im the second owner of mine it was a 7700 but now its a sager 9860. i havnt had any problems since i have owned it other then a few blue screens here and there. the original owner told me about a few minor issues but other then a dead pixel it seems fine to me. oh and incase your wondering it was converted to a sager 9860 bios and drivers becuase sager was far ahead of AW in updates for both. the only part still running a AW driver is the pci wifi card since sager must use a dif vender for that part. as far as use i use it at home and at work i game with it alot and use it for webdesign and graphics at work.

The customer support was mixed for me. They aren't very well organized, but they try their best. My issues were all software. My TV Tuner kept crashing, and I got more BSOD's and boot failures than I'd like. I've managed to cut back on the BSOD's and boot failures by updating everything. I fixed the TV Tuner by getting rid of PowerDVD and getting the nVidia mpeg-2 codec.

The bottom line from me is: consider yourself a rare case if you have any hardware problems, but also expect more crashes and errors than your average computer. The software issues are mostly due to the fact that there is so much more technology packed into these computers than cheaper laptops, as well as the fact that you can pull tricks with these Alienwares that you wouldn't even dream of trying with most computers. For instance, I have my Alien plugged into a wireless mouse, two wireless controllers, my cable signal, a PCMCIA Audigy, Creative Gigaworks 7.1 speakers, and my TV for the occasional clone display event. I find it very hard to overtax my Alien.
