The New Area-51 m5500

Thread Starter
So I checked the Alienware website and saw that the preorder option for the 5500 is up. The new line of computers 5500 and 5700 is now available for people to preorder. The 5500 looks pretty sweet! Anyone have any comments about if this is a good system or not? Currently looking for a lappie...

You looking for an all out gaming portable, or a true mobile computer?

The two new models, the 5500, and 5700 are both slim line, and intended to give good battery life. Unfortunately, they don't have the latest vid cards in them, as they'd create too much heat, and eat the battery too quickly for a mobile unit.

I was waiting for the AMD/7800 laptop for full bore gaming, but it's not really meant as a portable. The 5700 has the 6800go in it, with a 17" screen, so I'm thinking about that one myself. With three to four hours on battery, it would be much more versatile than the 7700 line, just won't game as well.

For all out performance though, you'd wanna check out the 7700 series.

dont get em for games. not in the long run anyways....

its 7700 and above all the way

I configured a m5500, for around 2400.00, which seemed pretty good to me. When i tried configuring a dell xps with the same specs, it came out to around 3100.00. So all in all I think alien has finally lowered there prices for once.

Well I guess I should have considered that when I ordered. Perhaps I wanted a mobile laptop that can play games and not a DTR?

maybe the part where i wrote "not in the long run anyways" implies that although it will play current games (although not at the highest of settings) it wont have the lastability og the 7700.... Hence if your primary purpose is gaming then my opinion was to go with the 7700 or greater.

If you wanted a mobile platform then your primary purpose isnt gaming, its mobility - so my post doesnt apply to you

Fujitsu-Siemens are offering the same confugurations for month or two already - Amilo 3438G and Amilo-M 1437G, but I would never recomend a Fujitsu-Siemens. Although 500 - 1000 Euro (prices in Europe where I am) for the Xeno-grey and the glowing eyes are a bit too much..

This is a post I made in the stickie in this forum.

I do game, and if you look at my desktop you will see that I am not concerned with getting state of the art components at the time they come out.

Look at it this way. I am going to make up a few numbers here, because I do not know how much Darth is paying for his Hypersonic.

My laptop is going to cost me 2200. It was going to be 2000, but I opted for the three year warranty. I am guessing Darth's laptop is going to cost around 4 grand. Right now both systems will play all games flawlessly. Now lets say in two years, I decide I want a new laptop. I sell mine on Ebay for 1,000 and buy a new one with current technology (not high end) for 2000. I now have a computer that is newer than Darth and I am ahead 1,000.

That's the problem I have with bleeding edge. Unless you pan on using the same system for 5 or 6 years, you are going to lose money on it.

Ewolf i was giving my view on what i would have chose..

im glad you have the market cornered with your little equation posted above but maybe that isnt exactly a fool proof plan... or on topic..

Now back to the OP.. If i was buying a laptop for gaming i would go with the 7700

just my opinion

Sorry, I was busy over at the http://www.Ineed2makeMyselfLookImpor...UPIDForums.com so I haven't been back sooner.

How is my post off topic? He asked for opinions on the 5500 & 5700. never once did he mention longevity. You did. I gave my opinion.

And where in his post does it say he wants it exclusively for gaming?
yes we can all post things that on second thought wasnt a good idea...

hence the edit.

Mate, my posting has said IF it is for gaming i would be going for the 7700...

i believe that your posting has been more directed to me in this thread than to what the OP originally intended

I absolutely dig the profile of the new 5500. I would definately hands down grab it but the vid card seems weak to me.

I am ordering the 5500m. I had initially intended to get the Sentia for my portability needs, but w/ the 5500m, I can do some light gaming (if need be) and all of my productivity for college, plus the added advantage of a larger screen than the Sentia. I love the portability of the Sentia, but with my approaching 40, and my wife going back to school soon as well, we need something with a bigger screen!

Don't be so quick to insert your foot in your mouth...

Since the introduction of the xps line, Alienware has frequently been less expensive than Dell configuration for configuration.

And the hardware you get in the Alienware isn't proprietary with features removed for a price point, like some of the Dell hardware.

And I don't have to mention the screen quality difference, but I will...

I'm thinking along those lines too. I wanted a 7700 for a while, but I've been waiting for the 7800, and to check out the AMD version, but the 5700 is really attractive.

All that screen, slim line, portability, battery life, and the 6800go is no slouch.

I wish I could buy both, but I'm a desktop guy, and I still have to get an ALX...

Maybe I should sell my house and buy one of everything AW makes.

I want one of their watches too, and Alienware underwear that says, "Got Probe?" on the back.

That's great! Here's an image for you- maybe they can imprint it on the underwear for you!

Then what are you trying to say then? That dell's stuff is better over all?
Well, I think Dell has better customer service for one. Have you tried to acheive anything with AW customer support? lol.

The thing that has me sold on Dell is the accidental care coverage they offer and that if you buy an XPS, their customer service is in the states and not India or Puerto Rico.

Wasnt it in India before, and after much complaints they moved it back over here?

Well to get back to the point of this thread....I was planning on getting a 15.4 lappy mainly for usual use. Neither for hardcore gaming nor ultraportable moving around. I was previously looking at the Sager NP 5320 with the X700. I'm kinda cought in bewteen that and the 5500m with the 128mb 6600. Trying to keep the price under $1600 >.< So as you can see its not gona be a squeeky top of the line computer. As long as it can play fear at like medium settings is good enough for me. Anyone think it can do that?
