Your parents or someone else with an established credit history can co-sign a credit application too. The application will still be under your name, this will help you in starting a credit history.
You can try getting a credit card but if you don't have a credit history it may be difficult to get one or may get one with a low spending limit (which will still help in building credit history).
Stay away from secured credit cards, they offer quick credit for a deposit BUT the interest percentage on these are very high (40-60%+).
If you are able to get a credit card always buy the fraud insurance, you may never need it but in this time and day it is better to be safe than sorry.
Oh yeah, watch your spending and start with one with a low credit limit if possible, that way you won't be able to do much damage.
