I re-loaded Vista this time and all is well. Instead of using the Nvidia 6600 gpu I went with the Intel GMA and I am surprised at a few things- First, it doesn't get hot like it used to. The fan is running much quieter and I like it. Second, I have good performance on most tasks. Third, I no longer have the multi-colored 'sparkles' I was getting while using the Nvidia gpu. I have a feeling that either the drivers were bad, (I updated them regularly) or the card itself is going bad. Since this is most likely the case I am going to probably order a newer gpu from MXM. I read recently that an 8600 can go into the m5500 and I might go that route...
