Good evening AW.

I was out earlier and went over to the storage unit that I have and rummaged around and came across the box containing my Area-51 m5500. It's been a long time since I've seen it and couldn't wait to get back and fire it up to see if it's still working. Well, it is. I was worried about an over heating problem that it was having back in CA- It would shut down after an hour's use. Anyway it's still 'kicking it old school' and I am backing up the files now and will install Windows 7 just to see if it makes a difference on this older hardware. If I run into problems, I'll create a thread so that others who may be wondering if they should go to Win 7 on their m5500's might learn from my mistakes.

Blaming CA weather for your shutdowns? That is so mean

No, I think that it might have something to do with Vista Ultimate being too much for the system. I'll see if my theory is correct.

Cool. Specs the machine out first

I hope that this works, because I really don't want to spend money on replacing the mobo, processor, etc.

I am sure it will, with some small tweaking. We are cheering you up.

Right now I'm running some system scans before I start installing Win 7. So far so good. The backup took a little longer than I thought- It's amazing how much data I accumulated on that laptop.

It's a 100GB HDD and it's almost exclusively music and DVD rips.

It was pure luck of that shot, a few minutes later and I lost the blue hue

Hard to say why you lost the blueness.

An interesting development in my m5500 shutdown issues: It seems that after installing Windows 7 it still shuts down. Since I happen to have my tool kit with me, I tore it apart and removed the heatsink/fan assembly only to discover that the thermal paste was pretty much gone. Unfortunately I don't have Arctic Silver on hand, but I do have the thermal paste we use on our systems at work. I cleaned off the remnants of the old paste, re-applied some new paste and guess what? So far the m5500 is working like it was new. Now I'm not saying it was a complete success yet (Don't want to jinx myself ) but it's running a lot quieter and hasn't shut down yet.

Nice to hear that cali weather was not the culprit of your shutting downs That can be really "blue".

Great work MB, specs the comp and chalk it up as another oldie but goodie for W7

I'm running into one issue, which I'll resolve once I get some sleep: (Kind of tired at 2 am ) My audio isn't working. Driver issue for sure. Now before I go to bed I'm switching from the Intel GMA graphics to the nVidia 6600 just to see what happens. The drivers for it will need to be loaded, plus I want to see what kind of Performance Index Rating I get.
