Too cold to walk the puppy.

Morning AW.

Since I'm able to still use the integrated gpu on my m5500, I loaded Ubuntu on it and it's running very well indeed.

I upped the RAM on it to 2GB (Max) a long time ago, and I just checked the system resources after loading Ubuntu- I am only using 10% of that 2GB while running Firefox with multiple tabs. It's cool to the touch, which is pretty hard to believe.

Open platform and community drivers always work best on any systems, regardless of their specs

my only concern would be drivers.

I have to say though that when I had Win 7 loaded on there (for just a short while) the RAM usage fell from the 42% at idle with Vista, to a reasonable 25%. I just couldn't get the sound to work for nothing, and then the dedicated gpu crapped out, which prompted me to load Ubuntu and use the integrated gpu. I wasn't able to get thermal paste so my baking experiment will have to wait.

Vista and W7 had learned a lot from Linux (or the same sort) regarding memory and paging handling.

@Steve: open source community will give you all the drivers you need

I ran Ubuntu on my Dell M140 and now it's running Mint. The only problems I had with Ubuntu were that I couldn't have sound from two programs at once, the first program took priority. Mint doesn't have that problem, whether from program updates or what. The only problem I'm noticing on it is that Flash is horrid on it, but that's an Adobe program issue, not a Linux issue.

I did have to look for a few programs and I think a couple drivers on Ubuntu, but I don't think I did anything special for Mint, it just found everything itself.

I almost went with Mint. I decided on Ubuntu just because of the huge amount of support the community has.

I just wanted to try something different. It's not too different from Ubuntu, same base, so the commands all work the same. I'm pondering putting something different on there now.

Before I left for work this morning I downloaded a flash video (.flv) and tried to play it back. Since this was a fresh install of Ubuntu the media player opened just fine however the proper plugins weren't yet installed. Instead of my trying to compile everything Ubuntu gave me a popup asking if I'd like to install the missing plugins and codecs. After they installed it played just as well as it would have on VLC in Windows. I was rather impressed with that.
