There was a test on "The Gadget Show", where they connected a brand new computer to the net, no firewall, no antivirus. In 45 minutes, XP refused to boot...ouch.
You can get viruses without clicking any files, they can invade your system even if you're connected by idle, i guess better safe than sorry. Plus i'm lazy, not a big fan of reinstalling everything .

Chakz,
I agree with you there, my opinion of AV's is that it is sometimes worse that the virus's it trying to protect you from. I've recently had to remove Mcafee from several win98 PC's because it brings them down to a crawl, even the uninstall process took 15-20 mins. Take what Norton can do, bloatware and leads to slow bootups IMHO.

Well I don't know what the gadget show was doing but I've had 2 XP boxes at home with no AV, and no 3rd party firewall, running since XP first came out and they've never been infected, not once and not with anything.

However I will add, being a IT Administrator at two schools, I should stress that if you are on a network, where you have no control over what other users are downloading, then some sort of protection is a must.

I really do nto think there is a such thing as a all around great AV they all have there pros and cons. And one person is always going to like one over the other. And Chris I agree with you if you watch what your doing you can aviod most viruses I normaly don't use AV because everyone i have used so far lags the system from what I can tell even avast does that after I installed it I noticed a change is preformace there really is not a good AV.
