7800 Upgrade available in us from Dell - Page 15

OK I am trying to decide whether or not to upgrade my card I have the go6800 standard and play City of Heroes and City of Villians. PLease someone give me the rundown on how much better video performance I will get with an upgrade to the 6800 ultra or the 7800 ultra. Is this gonna blow my mind, or am I going to spend $$$ without the big payoff? They didn't make the 6800 for my Inspiron 9300 when I bought it. It was only available in the XPS2.

Thanks,
Dave

I think I might wait until Bal`thzar has 7900 GTX's to sell
post #283 of 306
I would recommend the upgrade to the 7800 GTX over the 6800 Ultra.

If you wait a few weeks you may find some good reviews on the 7900 GPU and some insight into whether or not it will fit in your machine.

Hello again everyone..
Will I be left that far behind in terms of speed and performance at gaming if I opt to upgrade my 9300 with a geforce 7800 card, a 7200 rpm hard drive and the maximum memory? I weighing between this and getting a duo core with the 7800 already installed. What do you guys think?
If you mean a 7800GTX in a 9300 as opposed to a 7800 in a 9400, then you will actually have a quicker computer with the 9300.
mackandall.. it'll depend mostly on what your doing. If you want to game then keep the 9300 and buy a 7800GTX GPU. Yes I also highly suggest a 7200 rpm hard drive for gaming, 2 gigs and if you bought the 9300 with the slower 1.6 CPU then a quick pinmod will help you out. You'll like that for gaming more than a new 9400 with the slower 7800go (not GTX) GPU.

Note that the upgrades are not that expensive once you sell off on ebay the replaced parts. My 1.8cpu pinmodded to 2.4 cost 140.00 but I sold my 1.6cpu for 125.00 so it only cost 15.00 bucks to upgrade. I dont know what the 7800GTX cards are going for now but likely still more than I paid, 252.22. Yeah a deal from Dell some of us were lucky enough to get in on! I sold my 6800GO on ebay for 240.00 so the 7800GTX upgrade only cost me 12.22! My upgrades cost less than 30.00 bucks!

Alright...I read all 20 pages of this thread, and even though the question was posed a few times, not one person answered, or even commented. I realize it's hinted at..but can anyone give an actual definite answer....the 7800 ULTRA...is it a 7800 GO or a 7800 GTX???? There is no such thing as a 7800 "ULTRA" according to Nvidia's site. Dell is advertising tons of M170's in thier outlet with the "ULTRA" card...and the people in India don't understand what i'm asking them when I try to get clarification. Thanks in advance!

I just recently bought a xps m170 on ebay and the description said 7800 ultra. When I got the laptop I checked the devices and the name that showed up was geforce 7800 go gtx. I too was concerned with this but I guess it must be a mistype.

Yes the ULTRA would be the GTX version of the 7800.

I have seen adverts for the Inspiron 9400 with a 7800 Ultra - obviously referring to the 7800 non-GTX. You will know which card it is by which system it is installed in. The only 7800-series card that came with the XPS M170 was the 7800 GTX. The 9400 is only available with the 7800 non-GTX.
Excellent, thanks! I returned my refubished M170 with the 6800 ultra and ordered the same system "previously ordered new" with the 7800 GTX. Hopefully this one has a few less chips and scratches!

does the 7800gtx fit in the 9400/e1705?? and is it worth upgrading to it from the 7800go? finally, anyone know when dell might update the cards in the 9400/e1705??
Well, I'm thinking of getting a 7800 GTX for my 9300. Is anyone still providing them, or is e-Bay my only option?

I have the E1705 with the 7800 as well. I ran 3DMark and got the lacking score of 2996. I'm looking for the 7800gtx or 7900gtx and instructions. As for stats check out the link below on Nvidia's website. General info but the fill rate and verticies/sec on the GTX are 33% and 25% better than the 7800. If you look at the 7900GTX, much better in all respects. Wait for a 7900GTX mod......not sure or if it's even possible.

A few more links to info (check the bottom of the page):

Tom's hardware did a review of the 7800GTX and had a benchmark from 3DMark 2005. It scored a 6656.

Is it worth attempting the upgrade? I haven't looked at the video card yet on my e1705. The photo guide in these forums is kinda scary.... a lot of cutting, bending, and heating. I guess you have to be willing to part with the $1400 - $2000 if you mess things up. Let me know if you find anything.

But after talking with her she told me she would take care of it and gave me a new order and number here.

AWSOME gal, "seems the sales guy saw this was added to the order" With the discounts and all in the upgrade on the card about $300 worth, He saw it and cancelled it, so it would not bite into his commisions. I guess i could understand that, as i work part-on commision myself.
Still a cheap thing to do.
Anyways, i should have it in a few days with expidited shipping,
which is C00L.

I have The latest and greatest mix of AS ceramique and the cleaner and pre paste bottles in a review sample From "Colin T". Over at Arctic Silver..Another AWSOME guy!
I will be doing a "Photo + Video review" on the (U804) or 7800 Ultra, Install in my E1705 here shortly.

I should have had it today ;0(
But i guess i am lucky to get it at all
I will report on the progress.
While i wait i did re-do my ATI X800XT PE tonite With the fresh AS-C
Took OC`ed idle from 40-42*c to 31-35* C OC`d @ GPU 559 --MEM 624

I'm a bit lost at this point in the game. I was following it in the beginning but got glazed over. Just some real quick answers pls.
I have a xps2,2.1Ghz,1gb ram,60gb 7200rpm hd, and the 6800ultra.

1) The 7800 ultra(whatever its called now) WILL fit,right?
2) Is the speed difference worth the $300+ price?

1) yes...

2)honestly, it depends what kind of gamer you are... if you're a light gamer, the 6800 ultra should suffice.. however, most of nbf users here (including me) would tell you..."hell yeah!!"...
I should've bought it when it was under $300. damn.
also, is that something you can show? example: what your system got before upgrade and after? Using 3dmark05/06?
