Hello everybody.
At the moment i am looking into getting a new digital video cam. I have no idea of what to get. I dont want to go too far over $500, since this is for family use. THe other thing i would like to learn, is, can i capture video on a SD card to transfer to my laptop or do I have to use tape or other format? Whar bufget software should i sue for editing? I would appreciate some comments since i am a total newbie in this. My machine specs are in my signature. Thanks everybody.

Last year at this time I purchased the Panasonic PV-GS120. It was rated by Camcorderinfo.com as the best sub $800.00 camcorder and I have been very happy with it and it performs wonderfully. At this time of year the prices come down a few hundred dollars from when they were released earlier in the year. The PV-GS 150 is a great 3CCD camcorder and you can't go wrong at $509.00 from B&H Photo (link below). It uses mini DV tape and also captures to SD card. For software you could start with Windows Movie Maker (free) or try some of the entry type software Like Adobe Premiere Elements, Pinnacle Studio or Roxio Video Wave. There is quite a bit of software available so just hit some forums and see for yourself what others think. Your machine will work great with whatever you'd like to do. Also, do get a 4 pin to 4 pin firewire cable to capture your great movies from the camcorder to your computer. Good luck and enjoy a great hobby.
