I need a lappy just to run CS Source!

I am in the market to buy a notebook and requirements are; run Counter-Strike Source desent, Pentium M for mobility, and high quality WXVGA or XVGA screen(something with high resolution). Has to run Source at medium settings smoothly. Just don't want to lag in tight spots ya know.

My price range is $1000-1400 and not a penny more.

I have looked at the Dell Inspiron 6000 with 128MB X300 card and the Gateway NX550XL with 128MB X600. They are running around $1300 to $1400.

You gamers think I'm on the right track?

TOSHIBA TECRA S2

X300 - not really for games
x600 - Its OK.

suggest you take a look at the MSI 1029, even though it has only WXGA, might be worth it for the X700 and a Turion.

Damn.....nice laptops. Both look like great machines and a good price.

The MSI 1029 is nice but no Pentium M option! Expesive as hell being a barebone system!

TOSHIBA TECRA S2 Definitly a runner cause Toshiba makes solid equipment.

Wonder what they run in 3dMark05.

just to let you know because I'm not sure if you do, that MS-1029 that you linked to is the barebones, meaning no ram, processor or hd.

theres too many x300 haters on here. The x300 really sint that bad, i play fear and bf2 on mine with med to low seting with a slight overclock of the card. Search around, someone even put up a screenshot of them getting over 100fps with good settings on a i6000 wile playing source, which is nowhere near as demanding as fear or bf2.

Both asus z71v and Sager 3880 look like great lappys for the price. Anyone have 3dmark05 scores on them?

Just price a 9300 w/ 6800, 1.73 M, 512ram, and trulife WXVGA screen shipped with coupon for $1290.00!!! Choices choices choices!
somewhere between 2-3 thousand in 05. the z71 video card is underclocked by deefualt, but you can raise it up. you should probably be getting a score at about 2500 on both of them.
just looked at the 3880, and apparantly it overclocks a TON. gets 2800 in 3dmark 05 OC'd, 2000 @ stock, and the only reason they stopped OC'ing was because that was as high as the slider would go http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=80992. ive never seen any OC's of the z71, but it too should be able to OC reasonably well. with the new drivers you should expect even higher numbers. also, keep in mind that nvidia ussually doesnt do as well on 3dmark as ATI does, but the 6600 is as good if not better than the ATI x700 which gets a few hundred more 3d marks.

Edit: and if the 9300 has a wxga lcd, then it wont be very good...
also keep in mind, the 3880 weighs more than a 9300...

overall, id still say the z71v. the 9300 doesnt have the same build quality and the battery life on the z71v is much higher.

Yeah, you may want to consider upgrading your screen to WSXGA...are you going to work at all on your lappy or is it really just to play with? 'Cause the Asus and Sager both get more battery than the dell. I think I went for Sager over Asus 'Cause I wanted a WUXGA screen, since you won't be able to afford that in your budget, you might as well go with whatever's cheapest between the two. If battery/size isn't really a factor then maybe you can check compare benchmarks. The Dell's might be higher considering the video card, dunno.

Good point for sure. Being light and portable means alot! Plus a smaller LCD uses less power for longer battery life.

I would have to disagree on the build quality comment though. The 9300 has a great build and very light considering how big it truly is.

Having the high quality LCD goes a long way with the higher resolution. Makes multitasking a breeze and the truelife bright screen kicks ass.
the sager has the highest battery life of all of them, but it is also why it is so big/heavy.

yes, hte 9300 isnt bad, but the asus is better from this POV. ive never actually used a 9300, but i have a 6000 and it isnt very impressive.

the problem with getting the better lcd is that the coupons are now all messed up, and i dont think he can configure it. until they bring back the huge old coupons, i really dont see myself recommending dell.

I def want the WUXGA screen cause it is beautiful and high resolution is a must. Using this lappy for work is a must because I am on the road all the time battery life is important too. 6600 is a nice card and will push source very well to my understanding. Sager is nice but tends to end up a little out of my budget. Where can I get the cheapest DVD burner for the sager cause its propriatary?
what do you mean MSI is too expensive. you can get it for $1500 very nicely equiped (gig of ram, 60gb 7200rpm hdd, the works)
the 6600 will probably have trouble playing hl2 at 1920x1200. for a 15.4" lcd, 1680x1050 should still be really good.
Actually I played all of HL2 at 1920 x 1200 with the 6600 at Max settings. The other specs might have something to do with that...
