I need a lappy just to run CS Source! - Page 2

az71a doesn't have a WUXGA option

From www.discountlaptops.com:

Sager 3880: base price 1213$
15.4" TFT WUXGA (1920 x 1200) Active Matrix Display (Glare-Type) + 100$
1.73 Intel Pentium M (740) Processor (2 MB Cache
128 MB Dedicated VRAM - nVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 6600 16X PCI-Express
1024 MB DDR2 SDRAM (533 MHz, PC-4200, Dual Channel) (2 x 512 MB) + 80$
60GB Hard Drive (5400 RPM) +30$
Internal 8X DVD±R/RW LightScribe (Dual Layer) + / CD-RW Combo Drive +75$
Internal 56k Modem (V.90 & V.92)
Internal 10/100/1000 Ethernet/LAN Card
Internal PCI Intel® PRO/Wireless 2915ABG 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN
12-cell Smart Lithium Ion Battery (3 - 4 hours)

Total 1498$

Note the options, you choose the sacrifices...I'd probably drop the dvd burner and HD. The HD can be upgraded when you can afford it (though 40GB is NOT a lot!)

I don't hate it, but why suggest a new notebook that can only run today's games at minimum/possibly med. settings when you know the guy is going to want to paly a new game game at some point?

Dunno what to tell you, have you upgraded your drivers? I doubt that I have a superduper mutant card, I do say when it stutters (like FEAR)

My price range is $1000-1400 and I don't want to spend $1400 if I dont have to.

I priced a 9300 with 25% off coupon 1.73M, 512RAM, 60GB 5400RPM, WSXGA, and 6800 go for $1290.00 plus shipping. Sound like a sweet deal but Im not sure if I want to carry that huge thing around all the time.

I wonder why they havent been able to put the 6800 in anything else besides 17" lappys. I wouldn't mind seeing it in the Inspirion 6000 or something with 15.4" screen.

the dell precision m70 has the quadro version of it. expensive as hell though.
The 9300 may be big (17 inch screen) but its relatively light for its size.

You do realize that K8 in its different versions (Athlon64, Turion64) have the best FP and BP units that you can buy on a microprocessor today; and those are what drives the physics engienes behind all the first person shooter games, right?

PM may be nice for business purposes, and for certain applications that use datasets <2MB it may outperform anything else, because of the L2 cache and short pipeline (which is more efficient in occupying the cache space); but it has FPUs that were designed in the mid-1990's, and certainly won't be able to keep up on physics engiene when large number of objects are involved.

Just run Molecular dynamics on ScienceMark on a PM and comparable Turion to see which one will do better.

2. Big screen causes battery to run down faster.
3. BIG!

Pros:

1. Pentium M for longer battery life!
2. 6800 to pwnzor Source!
3. Truelife screen for bright high res. view.
4. Light weight for size.

If only I could find a lappy with 15.4 screen with 6800 that will sell for around the same price. Some day they will put it in the 6000 ...someday.

What do ya think? This guy runs something like 4000+ stock in 3dmark05!

That would be nice for games... but yeah, if you want portability it might be a bit too big for you. Those coupons do make them tempting.
Make sure you see a 17" laptop before you buy one. I was sure I wanted a 9880 'til I saw a 17" in Taiwan, just too big for me. Its not the weight so much as the size...
Yeah, it is like carrying a small child at times. You'll love playing games on it, but lugging it may be another thing.

This is true. It's freekin HUGE! My buddy just bought one and I set it up for him so I did get to play with one.

Just wish I could find a affortable, powerful, 15.4", lappy that pwn in gaming. You can't find the 6800 in anything smaller than 17".

Sux!
the 7600go should give the same performance as the 6800go, and it will be available in 15.4" laptops and maybe even smaller ones. i thought i wanted a 9300 at first, but now i realized that i would rather just wait a while for a smaller, lighter, cheaper, dual core with a 7600go and a 15.4" lcd.
FoShizzy...if you don't want to spend over 1400$ you shouldn't wait for the next new thing on the market. az70a and Sager 3880 are both powerful, affordable 15.4" notebooks. By the time they suck, hopefully you can change notebooks and buy the newest rig on the market when it comes out...

Who knows how long you will be waiting? 7600 isn't even released right? The sager with 6600 is pretty freekin dope though. Good 3dmark scores. I found it for like 700-800 on a few site but the HD, Proc, and ram addes up. Ya know, I really can't complain. These days you can get rockin lappy for not that much but Im in no position to ball right now so Im stickin with my budget!

Im gonna do some more investigation on the barebones lappys. Might prove to work out. Looks like my main 15.4" lappy options. The freekin Pentium M 1.6 with 2MB L2 cache is like 200 bucks. Bah...then ram and you got to get 7200RPM HD right.
The longer you can wait it out, the better the change you *might* get something you want. But the key is, just how long can you wait for.
