I need a lappy just to run CS Source! - Page 3

if you want asus, seriously check out c9tech.com. i priced a barebones from other places where i would buy all the parts myself, and the price at c9tech, fully prebuilt was just a few dollars more.

and no, dont get 7200rpm harddrive if you are on any kind of budget. the price/performance ratio on those is terrible. that said, dont get 4200 either, performance is crap and the price difference is minimal. 5400 is the best choice.

and the 7600 for desktops is coming out at the end of the month. i would fully expect taht the 7600go would be out within the next 4 months, most likely even earlier. the cool thing about hte 7 series is that they perform the same as the desktop versions, which means that "mainstream" mobile gaming can actually be a reality. i have desktop with a 128mb 6600gt with a mild OC and it performs about the same as an insprion 9300 with a 256mb 6800go. the only laptop i would conisder buying right now is the sager 5720, but it is too expensive for me, and i want something smaller with better battery life. i love the current line of asus notebooks, and i am eagerly awaiting yonah and the 7600go.

I would go for the MSI 1029. I OC'd mine and got just over 2500 on 3dmark05. The proccessor is swell. i see few if any drawbacks in real world use of the turion vs pentium m. It runs all games and is quick and speedy. the battery life isn't very spectacular at 3-4 hours max yet not horable but it is light and thin enough to take anywhere. as far as price goes you can get a nicely configured system fur under 1300. i got a 1.6 turion, 80gb hd, and gig of ram in mine as a barebone for under 1300.

if your thinking you need pentium M i would go with the asus z70v/z71v. it seem to be the most popular pentium laptop around here. I've never personaly used one but only hear good things.

if your going dell, consider holding off til x-mas. i think they have better coupons when the holidays come like they had nice coupons when back to school came like 40% off.

thats the problem with teh current 6600 series(and the x700). i get about 3600 in 05 on my desktop with a 6600gt. there is a huge gap between the two. the difference between notebooks with the 7800gtx and desktops with it is very small, only about 10%.

using that logic, the abosolute MINIMUM the 7600 for the desktop will get is 4000 points in 05(the 7800gtx gets between 6.6 and 7k). ten percent off is 3600 for the 7600go, which is 44% faster than the 6600 go.

again, speculation, could be totally off...

the sager5320 might be a good choice. 15.4" wsxga+. pretty powerful options. you can get it for around 1500, not too much over your limit.
