Notebook Dilema: delayed Athlon FX-57 versus P-M 2.26 now

My already-paid-for order...

http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=114011

...for a notebook with an AMD Athlon FX-57 CPU is now on its third Expected Shipment Date - and the folks at Hypersonic don't seem overly confident that this date will be the final one. I realize it's not Hypersonic's fault, and in general I don't mind waiting for what I want, but it's quite fustrating not knowing when to expect a computer that you've already made a cash payment of almost $5k for.

So now, I find myself looking at other options. (I've changed my mind so many times, you'd think I am a woman.)

I must have the nVIDIA GeForce Go 7800 GTX 256mb video card.
If at all possible, I really, really want a built-in kaypad (which is one of the reasons why I haven't gone with Dell).
I refuse to get a notebook with an Intel P-4 CPU.

Given these choices, Sager's 5720 (with the P-M 2.26 GHz) seems like a good choice.

Disadvantages of getting the 5720:
- slower (don't know how much)
- only 1 hard drive
- concerns over hardware problems (cracked hinges/display cover in particular)

Advantages of getting the 5720:
- more mobility (less heat, lighter, longet battery life)
- $1,500 cheaper (even after Hypersonic's cancellation fee)
- GET IT MUCH SOONER

I'd love to hear your thoughts. In particular:

Who has/hasn't had problems with Sager hinges and "gaps" in the display's cover?
Comments on relative speed.
What notable intensive games/applications have you run successfully at high settings?
What games/applications have you been unable to run?
Comments on Sager (PCTorque) customer/warranty service.

Thanks.......

kind of off topic but why would hypersonic charge you a cancellation fee for something they can't even build now and don't have the hardware for yet? that's ludicrous..... they have to admit that they haven't done anything to build your system yet to this point (nothing at all!) because they don't have the motherboard which is the major guts of everything. man if you want the computer, then fine, but if you don't then i'd raise h e l l because when you ordered it it didn't say anything about pre-ordering (which they DO say it now) and also they don't even have the parts. i have nothing against hypersonic and i might even buy from them when this darn clevo thing is released but a cancellation policy in this instance just looks bad because they haven't done JACK right now about your order. how can they? they don't have the motherboards to even begin work. what is the cancellation fee? christ!

my 2 cents-

My question is how can they charge for a notebook that, as Luke stated, is still in PVT, ie the specs are not finalised yet..are they going to refund you the difference ?

If you need it NOW: 5720 - just cause one guy had a cracked case doesn't mean all the other 5720 had the same issue (at least no one else reported it here and we know there are more than a few people here with the 5720).

In my case, I am waiting, the 5720 will be still be there when the 9750 come out. Also, waiting for an official NBF review of the 5720...

I agree with you, except for the fact that their cancelation fee is posted on their web site, and I ordered the system regardless.

But seeing as how they didn't even have all the parts in-stock when I placed the order (and was still given a build/test time of under three weeks), I may complain if I cancel the order.

I don't NEED it now, I just desperately WANT it now. Immediatly after ordering the laptop, I went out and bought (like a dummy) several games so I'd be ready when it arrived. Staring at this stack of games every day doesn't make the wait any easier.

I'd be content to wait until December 2, if I was sure it wold go out on that date. But as I talk to more and more people (including people at Hypersonic), I get more and more of a feeling that come December, the ship date will be pushed back several more weeks.

Even so, if there was no decent alternative, I'd wait. But I'm liking the 5720. So I find myself wondering...

Will it really be significantly slower then the Hypersonic I ordered? How much slower? This thread is the result of that wondering.

No it will not be significantly slower. In fact, Id be suprised if it was even a somwhat noticible difference. In gaming the graphics card is what is largely responsible for speed, proccessors will only change the frame per second +- a couple frames a second.

P-M is actually a very strong chip, and especiallly clocked @2.26ghz it will perform not worst, even better in some aspects then relatively clocked AMD. I want to reitirate, the chip is STRONG at higher clock speeds. P-M 2.26ghz will outperform P4 @3.4 ghz and will compete neck to neck with 3.6ghz.

However thats still really no comparison to the brute processing power of an FX-57. The FX will be a power system, when you get it. Because you seem like a power user, i'de say wait.

It seems to me that you know what you are talking about. I'm in the market for a new laptop and was thinking about the Sager 9890. I'm having a problem trying to decided about pm or p4 and wsxga or wuxga. I will not be doing gamming, only Autocad, Excell, Word, Access, Powerpoint and Photoshop. I do a lot of multitasking and am tired of waiting on stuff to happen. I'm now using a Dell I-7500 with a 501mhz processer. What can you suggest and why?
Thanks,

Hoss, with the amount of money you're going to spend on the Hypersonic, I would just max out a 5720 unless you have some very specialized needs.

When my 5680 started to die I figured I would get another Sager behemoth (once I get a machine I don't really keep up on the latest tech), but once I started reading the forums again I knew a PM, 17" WUXGA, and Nvidia 7800 would satisfy my needs quite nicely with a bit more battery life and less heat.

76TR6 - PM performance will suffer for many of the aplications that you cite because it does not have HyperThreading. Maybe a Dual Core AMD in a 9750 would be a good fit - but don't really have the full "locked down" specs at the current time. Lots of projections and estimates - but really nothing firm. Multitasking on a PM or "normal" AMD will lag behind the P4 with HT. The 9750 is "comming out" in a couple of weeks - I'd suggest you wait and see what that would/could provide you.
I'd vote that you wait. You have probably the biggest beast of a notebook I've seen configured, getting your hands on all that power will be worth it!
i would stay with it as it is already paid for
