Compaq Presario R4000 Graphic Card Upgrade?

Hi Compaq users, I usually make use of the Dell forums since I am an XPSG2 owner, but I have come here to settle an argument that I have with a friend. He owns a Compaq Presario R4000 and continues to say to me that the PCI I/III PCMIA slot will soon be able to be upgraded with a special type of Nvidia or ATI video card, that both of their websites do not yet display. He has been told this by both Staples and Futureshop, but I am highly doubtful that such an expansion exists. Can anyone confirm/refute this rumor?

I would be greatly appreciative of anyone who can.

No... and if they do it will be a crappy video card due to the lack of speed though the PCMCIA slot... They would be better off using firewire and theres such a small market for laptop videocard upgrades in non gaming laptops so...

That's exactly what I was thinking. Why would they make a graphic card upgrade in a laptop that isn't made for gaming. Thanks for your input.

No problem. I figured i would put an end to it...

Though i should mention that a company in Japan made a USB video card which costs about $100 but its not a "Gaming" Card it will give you basic graphics over usb...

The r4000 does have an express card 54 slot, which it has been speculated that it will be able to support gpus and have enough bandwith to use them well.

The future of pcmcia is the EC slot, with the 54 one being the top of the line one, so maybe he meant that.

PCmcia there is no way, but the express card is a good posibility

Actually, I think he may have been talking about the EC. So there is an actual possibility of an upgrade in that avenue?

((Not good for me if it's true because I told him so many times that I bet there was going to be no expansion card lol))

Its speculated... But extremely unlikely because of the limited bandwidth of the EC slot and also due to the fact that they are always located under the battery (or almost always) and the extra heat would cause it to explode...

OK I have heard that both ferrari4000 and R4000 use the same CHipset namely the ATI xpress 200m.

Is it possible to interchange the chipset?

Then we can have the x700 gpu with amd 4000!!!!!

You can devarshi, but a simple upgrade on the ferrari to a ml-44 will net u better benefits than from the a64 4000...

It'd be impossible to swap chipsets. Since the chipset is permanently mounted on the motherboard, you'd have to get an Acer Ferrari motherboard to fit inside the R4000. And that's not really possible to do, as laptop motherboards are not of a standardized format or size like desktop motherboards. Instead, they're shaped specifically to fit into the tight confines of a laptop along with the battery, optical drive, PC card slots &c.

Yes, the chipset is the same, but the chipset is permanently attached to the motherboard. So is the graphics card. And the motherboard is shaped specifically to the individual laptop. Just look at the placement of the ports on the R4000, and on the Acer Ferrari. All the USB ports, the Firewire port, and the power jack (among other things) are in completely different locations on the two systems. All of these things must connect to the motherboard. Thus the motherboard must be designed to fit all of these. So you cannot swap motherboards between different laptops. And because of this, you cannot put an x700 into the R4000.
