Serious problem with the TSSTcorp cdrw/dvd TSL462C

The behavior of this drive is really weird.

Watching DVD is alright. Recently I installed modern games such as AOE3 on CDs and Civilization 4 on DVD and they installed very quickly, pretty much the same as my desktop DVDRW drive.

However, the TSL462C doesnt seem to be able to read some DVDRW media such as a gigantic ISO written in the UDF format. The drive refuses to read the FIFA06 DVD also.

Today, I tried to install old games like Heroes of might and magic 4 and baldur's gate 2 both on CDs. The installation speed is absolutely horrible. It seems to read them at 1 speed as it takes an hour to install. The CPU load is 3% at 800mhz.

Is there some setting that I have to change so it always install at full speed? Is there firmware (I dont see it on dell site) so the drive can read the new DVDRW media formats?

any help is appreciated.

Thank you

Follow the specific registry tweaks in my sig to fix this.

If you have a 6 or more errors reading a cd/dvd your drive goes to pio mode which is really slow. Then you need to set the os to see the drive specifications using these registry tweaks.

humm, let me try, maybe that's the problem.

I tried to make the drive read these UDF isos a few days ago and it wont do it. I tried several times before giving up. Maybe it's been set to the slow mode now.

actually the problem turned out to be really simple.

I read more online about pio mode and it turns out that it happens after computer is suspended a few times. I rarely turn off or restart my comp but instead normally puts it in hibernation. So I simply restarted the computer and everything is good now. Stuff installed at full speed.
