The m70-FE5 is on sale right now at futureshop for $1699. I live in Canada, so the US specs might be diff I dunno. But It looks like steal if you ask me. Here are the abreviated specs:

-15.4" Trubrite(glossy)
-Pentium M 1.73 ghz
-512mb DDR2 533
-100gb 5200rpm Sata
-x700 256mb (I have trouble believing the high vram.... ..a typo maybe?)
-Dual layer superdrive(sh!t I sound like a mac user.....bahahahaha!)
-H&K speakers
-And I believe it has the new 3G wireless???

Probably gonna buy this next weekend. What does everyone think?

Go with it. That is a fine lappy. I suggest upgrading to 1 gb when you get it though. I'm pretty sure Toshiba only uses one slot for that 512
post #3 of 41
i wish i had money, i would buy it =)
its a good deal and i would jump on it before it went away.

Get it. Just don't get the stupid blue or orange cover, they look awful.

Of course if there's no other choice, get any colour you can.

When you get the M70, can you comment on how loud and bass wise they are, just like the qosmio and 5000 series?

I agree with the others, that is one sweet deal. Great bang for your buck.

Pop in an extra gig of RAM and that machine will sizzle with excitement.

Ya i definately think it looks like a good deal and i will mos def up the ram to 1gb. The colours i'm not too worried about, but the speakers will be interesting haha. I'll let you know the subwoofer/speaker issue if i get it. I just hope it doesn't have the crappy dvd drive issue like the m40-sf3 did. I looked at it in the store and the screen on that puppy is AMAZING.

I saw the orange cover today on a Toshiba at Circuit City; what were they thinking of?

Yes, Fidget, hopefully it sounds very nice.

among the growing number of m50's im seeing at my university the orange colour is actually quite popular.

I actually prefer the orange to the blue.

The grey looks nice, but is too dull compared to the other two colours.

I guess the colour preferences depends on your style/taste and the use of the notebook (business orientated or for home use)

I went from the SF3 to the FE5 and the wireless is significantly better. I think it was spec'd out to be just b/g but when i got it I saw it is actually a/b/g.

As far as the sound, its better than the M40 as well although it still doesnt have any bass.

The DVD drive is also much better than the M40's. Nowhere near the vibration/noise produced by that other beast of a drive.

As far as upgrading the ram... it is a must if you do anything more than word processing(if you don't do more than you prob dont need an FE5). Right now I still just have the 512MB, but I just bought 2GB online and shoudl be getting it in the next week.

So I went to futureshop today and talked with their senior salesman there in the laptop dept. I inquired about the m70's and he said that the ones with the x700's have been nothing but problems and people had sent a couple back with dead pixels(unrelated). He also showed me a few of the m70's which the video had completely gone. This made me sad....because they look so fricking nice. I hope somebody can reassure me that these are not common problems with this model. I still want a Toshiba, but I think now may not be the time to buy. Maybe in April or May? Buying an Asus or something customizable like that might be another option i suppose.

It just depends on when you want your laptop. Toshibas are good and probably offer the most competitive pricing besides dell. I admit they are not of the build quality of asus or sony but they are solid laptops. Dead pixels happen on all lappies. I say go with the M70. You can always return it if you don't like it.

first thing, never trust what futureshop tells you. they work on comission and they wont want to sell you a relatively inexpensive m70 when they can sell you a much more expensive model.

that said it may just have been unlucky, i mean with the sheer number of notebooks that toshiba sells there are going to be ones that are just gonna die, it happens with dell, hp, sony, all of them

dont worry about it, get the machine you want and if there is an issue use the exchange policy of the store, thats why it exists.

Fidget, I swear you probably work for Toshiba, but you sold me! jk
I honestly believe you though, for years i've known that Futureshop employees don't know their stuff half as well as most people think.(generalizing) And yes the dead pixels i'm not concerned about, right now my lcd has 4....LOL
I might wait to buy a laptop anyways, as I think having a 12" or 14" w/ a decent vcard would be ideal.

I totally agree with Fidget. Just look around in the other forums. There are duds everywhere. It happens.

If you can wait til April or May DO SO! In like January the Yonah (dual core PM) will be out and by the end of 2005 newer gpu's will be out. I'm willing to bet that the yonah replacement for the M70 will have a better gpu in it than the x700 and the dual core faster gpu will run circles around it.
